I need some help here guys. I have an 88 bronco woth a 302 and an AOD trans. Lately ive been getting a noise that doesnt sound to nice. When im accelerating i get this god awful knocking around noise, almost like my driveshaft is hitting the floor. It seems to be coming from the transmission/transfer case region. Also, when im on the freeway, doing about 55-60mph, it starts to make a squeeling noise, rather loudly i might add. Ive checked all the u-joints, they seem to be fine, along with the tranny mount and engine mounts, but found no problems. Any ideas what it might be???

radious arm bushings that are bad may cause the knocking sound you are hearing. where is the squealling coming from front? If so check the belt for wear and cracking.

Hi,

Just went through the same thing on my 88 bronco. The mechanic sent the double cardain (spelling?) joint to a machine shop for repair (sent the entire drive shaft). The good news is that this is common, the repair kit cost me $70. The total charge w/new U joints was about $400. Wow what a difference, I had no idea what w as making the noise. Heads up - for some reason the rear ujoints neet thread lock, they loosened themselves afterwards, no big dea. It's a 1/2 inch wrench btw.

Now, I've still got the smallest vibration under no load above 60 mph, but I'll figure that out another day. Wait til you see how quiet your ride can be, it will make you smile dude. Hope this helps.

Oh yeah, you didn't change your belt recently did you? I couldn't believe the squeal with a new belt. Went away when you poured a bit of water on it while running = not a bad bearing. Boy did I find an nice trick for this. The guy at Car Parts said: "this happens all the time. The old belt polished the pulleys, it is kind of like rubbing your finger around a glass - it rings (sounded more like I strapped a cat in there). He said go buy some Comet cleanser. Sprinkle a bit on the belt. It's abrasive nature will remove the polish. Oh, one thing - he should have told me to turn it off first (figured that picture would give you a needed laugh). But the damm thing worked. Pretty neat trick to file away.
