Pretty self explanitory from the title. I'm getting a K&N, I ordered it yesterday and it will be in today. Now I'm wondering if I should spend the extra bucks and eliminate the stock filter box and get the whole kit? Will it make that much of a difference?

Thought of another question. I've seen some people on here talk about making their own mods for their K&N to save money and not buy the kit. (Picture attached). If I buy the standard K&N filter that fits in my filter box can I do the mods later to eliminate the filter box? Or would I use a different filter for that than the stock replacement K&N?

in order to do the ghetto fab K&N fipk, you have to buy the filter element seperate from the kit itself. your rig will be a special case since you have MAF instead of SD (mass air versus speed density). but chances are you can still hook up just the stand alone filter element from the fipk kit to your MAF sensor and fab up a bracket of some sort to hold or suspend the filter.

let me correct my previous post. even though your rig is a 96, you probably still have Speed Density ECU. so you can do the ghetto fab K&N with no issues

Just an FYI...I ended up getting the K&N panel filter for the existing filter box. Not enough conclusive evidence for me to spend the $300 for the kit vs the $46 for the panel filter. I figure if I change my mind someday I can always still switch it out. Thanks again for all the input, it's appreciated!

The cheapest I can find the Generation II FIPK for my '88 is on jegs.com for $250 with shipping, and it's $370 on the K&N site. Does anybody know where I can get it cheaper???

why? its a complete waste of money. you can make one just as effective for half the cost if not less.

the factory airbox is better if you wheel often. but then you want to get the intake hole up higher. various ways to do it. mine is pvc. doesn't look very nice but it seals and was using the airbox with drop in k&n.

Hey there Seabronc,

Off topic here...but since I've got a post out there on the subject, and you show WARN autolockers, thought I'd ask how you like them. Hard to replace? Worth the money? Any difficulties with them?

Thanks :)>-

Seabronc's hubs arent autos, they are manuals. and no, its an incredible easy swap. should take about two hours total assuming your rig is a 74, your should already have manuals. stay away from autos
