I'm brand new to your boards, but I've already found a TON of great info!!

I'm having a recurring problem with my '95(302, e4od, no mods). Sometimes the engine will just die while I'm driving (freeway, side streets, or waiting at a light). On the freeway, if i leave it in drive and don't touch anything, many times it will start back up on its own. Other times, if it dies in slower traffic or at a signal light it won't restart for 5-10 mins. This is a very annoying problem that I have been trying to trace for almost a year!! In addition...occasionally while out running errands I will come back out the the truck and it will not want to start. Most of the time (cover your ears) if I spray a quick shot of starting fluid in the throttle body it will fire right up. However, this "trick" failed to work for the first time yesterday.

Here are the items that have been replaced trying to remedy this problem:

fuel pump

fuel filter

plenum cleaned

plugs, wires, cap, rotor

ICM (ign. control mod.)

PCM (powertrain control module)

fuel pump relay

PCM relay

Just a couple more pieces of info...I live in Las Vegas which may cause heat to be a factor. Secondly, this problem is very intermittent, thus hard to trace. Lastly, I did get two engine codes which seem to make sense but I haven't been able to pinpoint the issue.

The codes are:

211- PIP (profile ignition pickup) circiut failure

212- Loss of IDM input to PCM - spout circuit grounded

Please help...this is the 3rd Bronco I have owned ('78, '90, and '95) and I really need to get this driveability issue figured out so I can start working on the other mods. Thanks for your time!

Chad

Sounds like some sort of short circuit, maybe a bad ground or something. I hope you get it fixed because i know all to well how unfun shotgunning parts is and find out nothing fixed it. Good luck.

In your list of parts replaced, I don't see the pickup that is mounted on the distributor. When pickups fail, they often exhibit the symptom of fail and then after it cools down a bit it will function again. So yes, heat can be contributing to the problem.

Another possibility is that you have a bad connector.

Here are a couple of pages out of the 95 EVTM, hope they help :-B .

Good luck,

I did some electrical tests according to the Haynes manual last night and they traced it to the ICM. So I called Ford this morning to check $$ and availability and they recommended replacing the stator at the same time. From what I gather that is the "pickup in the distributor" that Seabronc is referring to...however, upon looking in the Haynes manual they indicate that the ENTIRE distributor must be removed and mostly disassembled in order to replace the stator (pickup, PIP sensor). Is that really necessary?? It appears as if one could just remove the cap and rotor and unscrew the stator from the top and slide it out. Am I missing something here?

Please advise. Thanks!

I would follow the procedure given in the manual. Not sure why the proceedure is like that for the TFI ignition, but it has been that way since 85.
