1996 E4OD today just started shifting hard. 1-2 shift and possibly 2-3. Doesn't do it all the time, but I had 3 cases of it today 1st issue with it ever. After those times it went back to normal. No codes. Fluid looks and smells normal. What do I do?

yo F259;

Is it E4OD or 4R70W?

if yes to either, see

96 Bronco-F-Series Workshop Manual (PARTIAL)

http://www.diesel-dave.com/vehic/manual/stj/stjleft.htm

Same as most earlier years exc. for OBD II in 96, 4WABS (93-96); ABS (87-92); Air Bag (94-96); 3 ***** Automatic Locking

Unfortunately, withOut Codes, and a Ford or equal test unit you prob will need the pressures, etc tested. but go s far as you can @ home; will bbl; have to see a doc

I would expect these Codes; but since hard shifts are intermittent. try the Ford Wiggle Test;

Engine Running Wiggle Test Procedure

Special Note:

•The Engine Running Wiggle Test may be activated any time the engine is running.

1.Hook up a STAR Tester, VOM or Scan Tool as shown.

2.Key off.

3.Start the engine.

4.For STAR Tester or VOM, activate Self-Test, deactivate and reactivate Self-Test to enter Engine Running Continuous Monitor DTM. DO NOT shut the engine off. For Scan Tool, enter DTM, then enter wiggle DTM.

5.Tap, move, and wiggle the suspect sensor and/or harness or drive the vehicle. When a fault is detected, a Continuous Memory DTC will be stored in memory and indicated as follows:

•STAR Tester: Red LED lights and/or continuous tone.

•Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL): Lights

•VOM: Needle Sweep

•Transmission Control Indicator Lamp (TCIL)

•Message Center (Continental Only)

Scan Tool: Beeps or shows Code(s)

E4OD Controls Overview, Sensors, DTC (s) & Diagram; The throttle position sensor is a potentiometer that is mounted on the throttle body on gas applications and on the fuel injection pump lever on diesel applications. The throttle position sensor detects the position of the throttle plate or lever and sends this information as a voltage signal to the powertrain control module. Now shifting hard all the time, o/d light blinking, odometer blinking, code P0500 - VSS.  If I end up needing to replace the VSS, what is involved?

VSS is located in/on the transfer case, where the speedodometer cable/wire connects. One bolt to remove give it a little twist and pull straight out .

yo,

VSS used to be in transfer case adapter until around 92 when it was move to rear diff.

Do you have 4 Wheel Drive?

Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) 9E731:

also ref to as RABS Sensor (mostly in 2 wheel drive)

Description: The vehicle speed sensor is a variable reluctance sensor that sends an AC/frequency signal to the powertrain control module. The vehicle speed sensor signal is used by the powertrain control module to calculate vehicle speed in mph. Used as an input in determining shift scheduling and electronic pressure control.

Symptoms: Harsh engagements, firm shift feel, abnormal shift schedule; unexpected downshifts may occur at closed throttle, abnormal torque converter clutch operation or torque converter clutch engages only at wide-open throttle. May flash transmission control indicator lamp.

Diagnostic Trouble Codes: 452, P0500, P1500, P1501, P0503.

see;

Section 06-09A: Brake System, Anti-Lock, Rear for 2 wheel drive;

1996 F-150, F-250, F-350 Workshop Manual

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

RABS Sensor

http://www.diesel-dave.com/vehic/manual/stj/stj69a23.htm

RABS Sensor.gif

Removal

1.Pull the wiring harness connector off.

2.Remove the RABS sensor hold-down bolt and remove the RABS sensor from the rear axle housing (4010).

Installation

1.Clean the axle mounting surface. Use care to prevent dirt from entering the rear axle housing.

2.Inspect and clean the magnetized RABS sensor pole piece to make sure that it is free from loose metal particles which could cause erratic system operation. Inspect the RABS sensor O-ring for damage and replace if necessary.

3.NOTE: Do not apply force to the plastic RABS sensor connector. The RABS sensor ****** should slide to the mounting surface. The air gap setting is between 0.127-1.14mm (0.005-0.045 inch).

Lightly lubricate the RABS sensor O-ring with motor oil, align the RABS sensor bolt hole, and install.

4.Install the RABS sensor hold-down bolt and tighten to 34-41 Nm (25-30 lb-ft).

5.Inspect the blue RABS sensor connector seal and replace if missing or damaged. Push the connector on the RABS sensor.

OR for Section 06-09B: Brake, Anti-Lock, 4-Wheel; same
