Welcome to the zone, post some pictures.

A lot of information is in your VIN number and the Safety compliance sticker on the driver side rear door post. This is good if someone hasn't modified the truck. You also have a Emissions sticker on the radiator mount right side that gives a vacuum schematic and also some info about the engine it relates to.

The easiest way to tell a 302 from a 351 in the 84 is the firing order and location of the coil. On a 84 the 302 coil was mounted next to the carb on the right side (passenger side US). A 351 coil is mounted on the front of the engine. The firing order for the 302 is 15426378 the 351 is 13726548.

The safety compliance sticker lists things like original color code, axle code, interior trim, etc. If you post those we can interpret them. Again, that info depends on no modifications. If it appears that it has been modified then there are other methods to determine axles, etc.

Good luck,

:)>-

Unless it has a ** cam in it. Then the order will be the same. That is a good way to tell. However measure across the front of your intake. I will post the distance for both later when I have a chance to measure them.

Ewwwk...these are rough numbers cause the runners are in the way. Measuring from the top of the manifold the 302 is 9.5 inches. the 351 is 10.5 inches. Does that clear anything up?

Thought I might add my 2 cents:

On my 1985 that has the 5.8L ** 4v it has that on the air cleaner cover, check yours, maybe it does too. That means 351 with a 4 Barrel. ** means it is 351M.

Ford stopped putting the M in light duty trucks in 79 (I think). You can tell looking at the block really fast if its a M or a W. If the t-stat is in the manifold and faces the rad it is a W. If it is in the block in front of the manilfold facing up it is a M.

The 351Windsor H.O. was only offered from 1984-1986 in the Bronco. Most folks agree that the H.O. stands for "High Output". It is a modified Windsor, not a 351M.

Other than the year model, about the only useful info in your V.I.N. is the 8th character which tells you the factory engine. A "G" is the 351W, 2BBL carb. An "H" is the 351W, 4BBL carb or H.O. If the letter is an "F", you have the 302, 2BBL carb.

This assumes the current motor is the factory original.

The 351M was no longer used in the Bronco after 1981.

They used that thing until 81? I stand corrected also.

Chris

For your bonus question what did the "M" stand for. I will give you a hint: It is commonly called the modified. But ORIGINALLY it stood for something else.

While the "M" in the 351M/400M is generally taken for granted as an abbreviation for "Modified", some may argue that it means "Michigan", where the motor was produced. The "M" was just a letter to distinguish it from it's little brother, the 351Cleveland. Here's a good article on the history of the Ford "M" engines:

Alright...thats it...you can no longer play. I had heard rumors of the "M" also standing for Mexico where there were some produced. Michigan however was the correct answer.
