Hey its me again the guy with the hot no start problem but i got that fixed good enough to satisfy me, But today i get in truck to go to work and it turn they key (wich has always been kinda stiff when its cold for some reason) and when i turn it to start all i hear is a pop like something mechanical just broke. So after the fiasco trying to get a way to work i went to advance and got me a new ingition switch hoping it could be that easy, but not this week :( /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />. I put the new switch in and same thing i turn it to tun and get nothing all the lights and stuff come on fine as if it was gonna start but i think there is a broke spring or something cause the stitch does not return to run after i turn it to start i know it has to be something deeper in the steering colum. Any ideas on what i can change or fix or how the **** to get the steering collum apart i see no screws or anything to get inside the collum. any help is appriciated. In case u hadent read earier post i got 88 5.8 XLT Bronco thanks.

Sounds like you broke the link that hooks the key tumbler to the push rod that operates the switch on top of the steering column. A real PITA to change but doable. :-&

Good luck,

You need to remove the steering wheel and column shroud. Do you have a tilt column?

sorry to sound stupid but not sure what that is it doesnt move i know that but it is tilted upward
A tilt column has a lever on the left side that when pushed will allow you to change the angle that the wheel is tilted at. Do you have the tools to remove the wheel?

Same thing happened to me, for the time being you can use a ***** driver or something metal to jump the terminals on the relay under the hood. I had to do that for a week or two until I put in my push button starter. All you need to do is get a starter button for $5 at a parts store and run accesory power or any power for that matter to the switch and then the other side run a wire to the relay. You will see that currently it is a very small wire (hence the point of a relay) that tells the relay when to give power to the starter. I ran my own wire becuase when my starter stopped working i was doing some serious off roading and guess i shorted the wire somewhere, so I ran my own. So now it works and I always wanted a push button starter like a racecar.

Did that make sense?

A pro should be able to replace the link for under $200.00. the link should be available at a Ford dealer. If you had the tools to take the column apart I'd spend the time to get my shop manual out and give you the step by step procedure. A wheel puller isn't that expensive. I'd guess under $25.00 since I haven't paid for one lately. You might be able to rent one from a place like AutoZone or a tool rental place.

Good luck,

:)>-

Yeah I knew I wasn't very clear before. Basically you are just sending power momentarily to the relay, which then sends power to the starter. The key will still need to be in the run position to start it. Run a hot wire to the switch, i ran mine from the radio power, so that it only has power when the key is on, otherwise sometimes I turn the key, but not all the way to the on switch, and in this case the key would not be on but since the starter button doesnt know that, I could sit and turn the engine over and over and it wouldnt start because the key isnt on. I also have the brake light on all the time so that lets me know when the key is on. Back to the install, so run power to the switch and then from the switch run a wire to the relay. There are 2 big terminals and one small terminal, the small terminal (has the small red wire in my picture) is the one that you want to connect to the starter button. The other picture is where I put my button, it works out very well because my right hand does the starting and my thumb goes in the little storage thing and gives me some leverage to push the button. And there is room to mount the switch, which is why I put it there. I also wanted it a bit out of sight, that much harder to figure out how to steal LOL

So there you go, cheap fix, still retains the same level of security maybe even more.

you can use any old wire, just as long as it is as thick or thicker than the stock wire. Which is like 18 guage I think, so 14 or 16 is fine. And the button can be found at any parts store for 4-5$.
