I recently purchased a holley SA-570 for my 87 B-Co 5.8L 351w...but we'll circle back to that. When i had my engine/trans rebuilt they put a remanufactured 4180 carb back on (the oem carb for my B-Co). I had problems with my B-Co near stalling when braking hard or making turns while in motion (with the 4180). I did research on tuning a holley carb, which led me to believe that my float levels were not set correctly. Im not sure if the lock *****/adjusting nut is different on the 4180 or not, but i tried adjusting the primary float level to solve that problem...which led me to more problems. The 4180 has vent tubes in the front of the primary fuel bowl and on the rear of the secondary fuel bowl (i think im saying that right). anyway, after trying to adjust the primary float, using the sight plug method, i had fuel pouring out of the vent tube on the primary side...not good, on a engine that is already hot..finally, i got the float level down (no fuel pouring out the vent tube). Which leads me to the point at hand. My B-Co was running very rough after i did the float adjustment. When i started up cold, the engine would not stay started unless
i kept tapping the throttle. even after the engine warmed up, and was able to stay started without me tapping the throttle, it idled very rough
while warm. I read sometime the float needle/seat can get stuck after adjusting the float level, and that tapping the primary float bowl and/or lock *****/adjusting nut can unloosen a stuck float needle/seat. So i did it, AND IT WORKED!!! No more rough idle. even when i brake hard, or turn sharp
while moving the near stall problem is not there. There is a very minimal hickup at idle, but thats it. and im sure that can be solved with a little more tuning.
This may not help alot of people with rough idle or stalling problems..but if you have those symptoms its worth a try. In my case it worked! Now that im done with the informative part, should i install the Holley 570 SA?? I am aware of the "if it aint broke, dont fix it" type responses.
but from a performance standpoint, would it be worth it?
