I have just had a 1984 Bronco repaired by my mechanic. I sank about 1300+ into it. He fixed ball joints, brakes, tie rods, things of that nature, but he said the engine seems to be fine(when he drove it). Most of the time it is, but it tends to idle so low at times that it stalls out when in drive at red lights. Could I just need to adjust the idle *****? I know it is a very old car and still needs more work, but I need somewhere to start. Thank you.

Sorry to see that nobody answered you on this. By now you probably have figured it out, but just incase, I'll give my .02 cents.

If you look under your hood on the front right side of the radiator support, there is an emissions sticker. It gives the proceedure to set your idle adjustments. It sounds like your cold idle is OK so you probably should be able to get away with only checking the curb idle adjustment. That is the ***** that is located on the linkage side of the carb. It should be set so the engine idles around 550 - 600 RPM when in drive, that works out to be around 1600 when in neutral. A by gosh and by golly method would be to bump it up a 1/4 turn and put it in gear. keep bumping it up say a 1/4 untill it keeps running, then bump it about 50 RPM. If it won't idle in gear at around 600 - 650 RPM, you probably have other problems.

It is best to time it and then go thru the entire proceedure listed on the tag.

Good luck,

:)>-
