Hello, I recently had problems with my idle being a little too high. I went to auto zone to have them read the code and they came up with the throttle positioning sensor. I replaced that but in doing so I did not replace the throttle body gasket. Should I have done this? Now, after high speeds (like 55 or higher) when I come to a stop the truck idles high (about 2500 rpm) and then it wants to stall. It would stall too if I don't hit the gas peddle. Also, when I went to auto zone another code came up for my canister purge valve. What is that? Also, my check engine light comes on when I am coming to the stop and the truck does that high idle and stall thing. Do you think this is from the canister purge valve or me not replacing the gasket to the throttle body? Please help. Thanks. I am making trip from NC to FL very soon and I wouldn't want to drive it all that way without it being tip top. Thanks again.

I replace the tps already and it only made my problems worse. But not the idle air bypass valve. Where is that located? I have another question for you. When my check engine light comes on I get a pinging and knocking when I accelerate. There is no lack of power though. That baby gets it when I want it to. I looked up some troubleshooting items in the book and the erratic idling and pinging and knocking have things in common for the fix. They are distributor components, fuel filter, spark plugs and wires and I think I should replace that throttle body gasket, what do you think. Thanks.

One other thing. I did read your thread about your idle problem. Did you put the tps on wrong the 1st time? I thought it could only go on 1 way. Where is the idle air bypass valve?

the air bypass is under the black plastic piece and its pointing tward you. its got one connection. its on the right side of the throttle body. it sets the idle when your foot isnt on the pedal. i put the tps on right, however when you get an accurate reading, it messes with all the other old componets. so it made it alot worse, it would freak out when i was driving...

Hey Kansas.. you are becoming quite the idle troubleshooting expert eh? :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

Good job man!

Rigs.. what year is your rig?

What engine do you have in her?

If you spray some carb cleaner at the base of your throttle body gasket and it makes a difference, then you need to replace it.

I'll see if I can find the post that I put up that included a picture of the IAC.

The IAC Idle Air Control is otherwise known as the ByPass Air Idle Speed Control (BPA-ISC) Solenoid
Please see the last post in this thread for pictures

Thanks guys. And thanks for the pic joe. You mentioned carburetor cleaner. The idle will raise up if there is a leak and I spray that into the opening correct? Another thing, what do you make of that pining and knocking? Timing? Like I said though, this baby lacks no power at all. The higher idle and the pinging and knocking seemed to start right after I changed the TPS. I guess the next step would be to replace the IAC, thanks....everyone! Thank you Yoda! Smart one you are. Better my truck will run now.

Jersey, yes a better mechanic he is, comes from the same state does he, yes yes carburetor cleaner for locating vacuum leaks it will. Raise the idle it will... yes... hmmm.

Yes I would say that incorrect ignition timing is what will give you pinging. What year is your truck, and which engine?

Unless someone ****** around with your distributor, I don't think you should have to adjust it. If you do, just like with the old distributors one had to disconnect the vaccum advance, with these newer ones one needs to disconnect the SPOUT connector first. There are a number of components/ sensors that give information to the computer to regulate timing. So you will have to pull codes again (after you checked for vacuum leaks)

BroncoJoe, you are the man! I just changed the IAC and haven't tested it yet but about to. Wish me luck. On the IAC there is a **** that turns, what is that for? I know you're probably tired of the dumb questions but good teacher you are...HMMMMMM. I am learning alot about these sensors and such. I thank you I do yes! Where at in Jesey are you from? I worked in Bridgeport, NJ for eleven years. Now I reside in North Carolina, just moved up from Florida. My fiance is from Pennsville, NJ. Alright buddy, let you know I will how truck runs with the new IAC. Thanks again. Yes, very good mechanic you are.

Oh, and I never did answer your question. My truck is a 95 and has the 302 5.0 in it. Better knowledge you will have in troubleshooting now yes. See ya. Thanks!

Giving credit where credit is due.. KansasBronco pointed you to the IAC.

The **** on the side that rotates is the idle adjustment *****. I do not know the proceedure for setting it, but have read about it, but having never done it I do not recall what I read.

My best friend Harry Miller lives in Pennsville. Small world eh?

Very small world indeed. Hey, I put that IAC on yesterday and the truck is running tip top. No problem with the idle at all. A tune up is next on the list however. I know it needs that. I can't believe it. Something that took ten minutes makes a world of difference. Thanks again. And thank you kansas very much. I'll have to ask my fiance is she knows harry. How old is harry? Pennsville is a small town. Everyone knows everyone in that town. See ya. I'm sure I will be back with more questions. This site is awesome.
