I bought a '93 bronco a few months back and have put a considerable amount of work and money into it.

I had it running good for a few weeks and now it's acting up again.

First off, It needs ether to start, always. After it starts, it has to clear itself up for a bit. After about 3 minutes, it idles fine.

When the bronco is put into Drive, it won't roll under idle power on flat ground and needs some coaxing of the throttle to get rolling. It feels as though the E-brake is engaged, as the RPMs and much higher than the should be for how fast it was going. I came to a slight incline and the engine revved, and couldn't get me over it. We heard two loud clanks coming from the engine area.

The engine won't rev over 2200 RPM while in Drive.

However, when I put it in reverse, it runs as a normal vehicle would.

What do you think the issue is?

I fear that it's the transmission.. But hopefully its not?

I love the bronco's, and I just wanna see this thing run.

Help me out guys!

I'm no transmission expert, but it doesn't sound good. If it goes fine in reverse, but not drive, would have to think the trans took a dump on ya.

It actually sounds like the pump in the trans is not putting out the pressure. When you increase the throttle it pumps faster but if its weak your never going to get full power from the trans. And the reason that reverse "feels" normal is because reverse is a lower gear than the rest, which needs less power to get moving.Dont go by what im saying. Its just maybe an possibilty

when was the last time you changed the transmission fluid?

if it hasn't been done in awhile that is the first thing i would suggest. when you change the fluid and drop the tranny pan take a look in the bottom of the pan for anything that doesn't belong (metalic pieces, clutch material etc)

if there's alot of sludge in the bottom of the pan then i would have to say that you may be needing a rebuild or a new tranny

Im sorry to say my friend but your tranny would be on the F'ed side.

the transmission in my drag car, (before it was my drag car) was doing much the same thing.

it was having trouble with 1, 2 and drive, but reverse was always fine.

could be two things, here is the easier/ less painful one, stator pump in the torque converter could be going not building enough pressure.

or number 2 ( the more likely and more painful one) with the additional factor of your tranny making a couple of clunks, this is what happened to me. tranny had been sitting for 10 years before it made it into my car, seals had dried out and fluid made it onto my clutches, the clutches inside the tranny then were slipping like crazy, got hot and got F'ed up bad. by the time I got home I only had reverse.

pull out the tranny and send it to a shop and expect to pay alot of money to get it back, or find a new engine and tranny combo that actually start and run well and swap it in.

I paid 700 for the tranny rebuild kit and converter, and 700 in labor to get it done.

I however got mine rebuilt for the 600hp that I was going to be getting out of my engine after my transmission came back.

thats why my bill was $1400.

I'm with the tranny here considering the reverse versus drive. You could add about 100-200 lbs in the back and if it still acts the same I'm totally with the tranny though Miesk5 info is truly invaluable cuz this guy is really good.

The tranny is actually pretty easy to replace too. I'm 6'1" 140 lbs and I was able to drop an AOD and put in a rebuilt I picked up for $900 by myself. It was a **** of a job and that's one of the heavier transmissions if not the heaviest in these trucks but it wasnt too bad. Just put some jack stands where it was going to drop, 4 of em, yanked like **** to separate it giving it upwards pressure not to bend anything, then got the new one, put it on my chest, skooted under the truck, lifted it up onto the jack stands, and spent about 30 minutes going back and forth trying to get the bitch in. Had to play with the flywheel, but it finally lined up and slid right in. Made sure it was secure on jack stands then went and had a few beers. Total removal and installation time was 7 hours by myself including removing and reinstalling the transfer case. I was also extremely impressed to see me with an AOD on top of me slid under the truck without any obstruction. I only have 31" tires too :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

I will say my method was very risky and could've involved a hospital trip or death, but I like to live on the edge and fix my own stuff anyways, typically with a mild regard to safety, hence the jack stands.
