my oil pressure gauge does not work. now i assume that it is just the gauge that does not work.... i never thought about if the engine actually was getting oil or not. how long would the engine run with out the oil? would it be possible to fill the engine with enough oil that you would not need the oil pump to work? maybe say just long enough to actually sell to someone?

now here is the story... i traded a ranger for my bronco. guy told me the engine was rebuilt. you can see brand new gaskets threw out the engine... the oil gauge is one of the things that needs adressed with the bronco... well i checked the oil the other day and it was half way up the dipstick. i am wandering if it is the right dipstick as it kinda catches pretty hard when you are putting it back in. i am in need of some help here and really hope that some one will be able to get me some help. i am new to this whole thing and really dont want to get stranded on the side of the road because of something so stupid..... thanks in advance!

Here is my 2c. First off, check the guage to see if it is working. Disconnect the wire going to the sensor and turn the key to the run position. Ground the wire to the block using either a jump wire or a ***** driver. All you have to do is make contact with the wire to a good ground like say an intake manifold bolt, head bolt, etc without paint on it. If the check the guage and see if it pegs to the high mark. If it does, your guage is working but the sensor may be out. Get a new sensor from your parts store (probably $10.00) and replace it and see what it does with the engine running. If that corrects the issue, youre golden. If not you may have an internal problem with the engine. I think that all of my Ford engines dipsticks stick on the way in since Ford tends to have funky bends in the tubes that they dipstick has to navigate but it may still be the wrong one. Saying that the guy that rebuilt your engine used the stock block and all the stock sheet metal (oil pan, valve covers, dip stick tube etc.) you could go to a Ford Dealership and get a new one and try it out but not knowing if that is even the same motor that came out, you might be throwing money away doing so. As for how long the motor would last without oil pressure, not long, maybe minutes. The upper end of the motor would start clattering pretty bad without oil pressure, think of when you change your oil and that nasty sound that happens the first few seconds after start up when you first put in the new oil and filter, that would be happening constantly if you had no pressure (atleast for a short time until something shot out the side of the motor). Honestly, i think your sender is bad or your guage is bad but good luck...

thanks for the quick reply... considering that i drive the truck to work (about 20 minutes one way) i will agree with you and say that it is one or the other.... never thought about the top end not getting oil and the noise that it would make...

now to the next question....

where exactly is the wire that i am going to disconnect to test the gauge?i read some where that it may be behind the power steering or the water pump i cant remember.....

thanks again for the quick reply!

a engine wont run very long at all with out oil, only seconds. Then its most likey seized REAL bad, with out oil pressure though it might run for a few minutes. Ive never seen anyone test it though...most of the time you turn it off whern you here the clatter that the whole valvetrain makes. If you not gettin any oil pressure it i think its either gonna be your oil pump, cam bearins or main bearins

I'm sorry guys, but I just have to say that this is just wrong... dead wrong!

would it be possible to fill the engine with enough oil that you would not need the oil pump to work? maybe say just long enough to actually sell to someone?

This comment bothered me since it was posted. I didn't comment hoping that everyone else would ignore it as well.

broncojoe.... please dont think i was asking this question so that i could try and sell my bronco to someone the way it might of been sold to me. the only reason i asked was because i got a really good deal from the guy. i traded a 91 ranger with almost 300000 miles for my bronco. the guy said it had a rebuilt motor with less then 3000 miles on it and you can tell that is true because you can see all the new gaskets that were used.... i am a very honest person and would never try and sell something that is broke or gonna break.

just so i can update the thread a little i bought a new gauge and sending unit and the oil pressure is working great. the gauge reads between 36-40.... the gauge reads up to 100. what would be a good reading as i am not use to the number thing. what would be a low oil pressure and what would be high? as always thanks to every one that has helped me out. i just got my bronco a month ago and fixed a few things already thanks to people here at broncozone! thanks!

am3gross,

I am glad that I brought this up. Yes, I did interpret what you said negatively, and I thought that you wanted to pass your dead bronco off onto someone else. Now I understand that you were wondering if the guy you got it from pawned it off on you. Thankfully he did not.

Fortunatley you have excellent oil pressure. 40 lbs is great.

Hopefully I can make it up to you by helping you out with a question some time.

BTW... Welcome to BroncoZone!
