I just found this site today after searching the web and this forum for an answer to my problem. I have a '96 Bronco with a manual shift transfer case. It will not engage into the 4w/d mode anymore no mater what position the shifter is placed in, I've checked the linkage and the assembly is fully operational and intact and the linkage pins have full motion to the ends of the bracket. I tried to engage the 4 w/d while rolling at about 5 m.p.h. and heard a ratcheting sound-- like the shift dogs were dragging??? Is there an adjustment? - Where?

I also tried the low range, it functions but the front shaft out of the transfer case still does not turn. If this is an internal problem with the transfer case, would it be better to R&R the case? This Bronco has 70,000 miles and is very good shape otherwise. Thank you in advance for any input.

Yea, rebuild that transfer case.

I haven't had any problems with my transfer case so far, but just to play it safe, rebuild it. It pays off in the long run....

Gr8wheels, it does sound like you have an internal t-case problem. Check the following link, in the transmission section, for help with the Borg-Warner 13-56:

OK, I did alot of research and found a professionally rebuilt transfer case on Ebay. I installed it yesterday and I have the same problem with trying to get it to engauge 4 wheel high while moving-- just a loud ratcheting sound until I come to a stop and then it will "jump" in to 4W/D but only after the truck stops rolling. I've checked the linkage, shifter and even replaced both automatic hubs, did I get another bad transfer case? Last year I had the transmission replaced and the truck was returned to me with the same problem, the shop said they adjusted the linkage and it worked fine-- for a while,(about 10,000 miles) then it started banging while running in 4W/D and the end play or runout got very bad and the loud thump that was made in 2 W/D when taking off from a dead stop got worse. This newly installed case has cured the thumping noise on takeoff but I need some advice on the manual shifting linkage as I see absolutly no way to adjust it. The shop that sent me the case is stumped and will send me another one but if there is an adjustment I would like to try it first. The Bronco is a 1996 with an automatic trans.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Perplexed Pete
