Ok so im gettin really tired of this Edelbrock carb that PO put on my bronco. I want to put either a Holley 670 Truck Avenger or a 650 Double Pumper. I know some of you are gonna think im an idiot for wantin a holley, much less a double pumper but im a die hard Holley fan. Now i know the double pumper requires some tuning but im pretty good with carburetors. Now im kinda leaning towards gettin a double pumper because i can get a manual choke, its cheaper and ive seen them run and some pretty crazy shit here in the rockies with no problems. And im not gonna put EFI on it, i like carburetors better and there easier to work on. Plus the less electronic i have to f*ck with the happier i am.

hollys arnt bad they just dont last long (before you have to rebuild them) and are a pain to tune if you havent done it to them before

What kinds of drugs are you taking ? Have your guy call MY guy so I can get some Ok?

Holley's have *never* been good off-road carbs. By the time you dump the time & $$$ into tuning one to work well with your combo you may as well have bought a Predator or a Pro-Jection. Even the Edlebrock (a design they simply *bought* from Carter) works better out of the box. Your basic holly sucks wind right out of the box in most off-road applications and while I will *grudgingly* admit the Avenger is a capable carb, Holley charges you thru the nose for a carb that *should* have worked well right out of the box considering the upgrades it received. For my money it costs too much and needs too much tuning to work with each individual engine/tranny combo. Oftentimes a nice spreadbore quadrabog works well enuf for me (how mant "powervalves" will a Holley burn thru in an afternoon of tuning ?).

Well the Edelbrock i have never runs right, even when i finally do get it to run right its not long before its f*cked up again. I was thinkin about trin out a 650 Holley Double Pumper on an Edelbrock intake. All the double pumpers ive seen run out here have done pretty good.

I had two Hollies with this engine and even though both have worked well, I probably will not go for a 3rd for the same reasons previously stated. Even though they have solved the power valve problem they take too much tuning. If I were building a racing machine then I might consider a Holley but not for a Bronco. Another reason is they tend to run too rich and with the way the price of gas is going, I am probably going to go for something else, currently leaning toward EFI with an AOD on it, (God, I never thought I would hear myself saying that word  ). The simple side of me says stay away from electronic controlled engines for the plain fact that a stupid sensor can cause it to run like a piece of crap. That may still sway the decision to remain with a carbed engine.

Any way, good luck on your choice. It's your truck after all is said and done.

Your right, it is mine. I happen to like holleys too :D /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" /> , i just wanted to know if i should get a 650 Double Pumper and make it work for me or spring the extra for a 670 Truck Avenger. Im leaning towards the Double Pumper becuase i dont really want to drop $400+ for a carb just to replace the f*cked one.

I'm a Holley fan, too. This is my suggested list of ranking of what type I would put on the Bronco:

#1-Truck Avenger 670cfm

#2-Street Avenger670cfm

#3- Double pumper650cfm

One of the first cars i owned (80 Camaro) ran awesome with the HLY DP I put on it. You could see the gas gauge move 1/4 tank every time you pucnhed the gas pedal. I also like the Edelbrock 1400 series carbs. If your's is acting up, it may just need an overhaul kit. I did that o nthe 85 Chevy K10 a few years ago, and it cleared up the stumbling problems it had. Cool good see a another Holley guy, everyone else here kinda bashes them. I think the edelbrock on my truck right now is a 1406, its set up to be smog legal and i dont need it anymore, and if my truck had just a standard 1405 id rebuild it. I like Edelbrocks too, but since i like Holleys better i was gonna get either a Double Pumper or Truck Avenger. Ive worked on DPs before but never done a thing to TA, but if i can tune a DP i bet i can get it. Runnin a Street Avenger a bronco never occured to me, do they work alright?

Cool so i guess a Street Avenger is a option too. Hey how much did it cost you to get your engine bored, new pistions and all that, and about how long was it gone?

Just thought of this, how would a Holley 2300 500cfm 2 barrel work? I know that they run really good off road, and the edelbrock 4 barrel on my truck is a 600 so will a 500 2 barrel still leave me with some power? Im seriously thinkin about getting one, i liked what it did off road never flooded, stalled, or hesitated once!

Well, I *won't* disagree. Ugly or not the fact of the matter is that holley DID recognize the problems they faced from fuel injection and they DID come up with fixes. These days you *can* setup a Holley to deal with off-camber fuel problems and a lot of other offf-road issues, HOWEVER you *still* have to PAY for every "improvement" kit that you install, they're sadly lacking in customer support. The bottom line STILL seems to be that at the *very* that least the retro throttlebody kits are the way to go. Being stuck with a fuelie system for the moment I don't pretend to even be current, but I *do* know that the simplest system is the easiest to maintain, repair and get home with.

Carbs work just fine up to a point, after that they just don't have what it takes to supply the engine with the fuel it needs. Like it or not that's the deal. At *some* point you're faced with a choice. Run your truck at a lower level or supply it with the fuel the engine needs, it's one or the other.
