Highway speed noise

I just purchased my 1st Bronco, a 1982 Bronco, 6 cylinder, 4 speed manual.

On the way home with my new toy.

1) As I got up to highway speed in 4th gear, i noticed an ear splitting scream that appears to be coming from the transmission or rear end. It appears to only do this in 4th gear at 40+ mph.

2) The rear axle is pouring oil out of the right rear wheel.

sounds like you have a bad bearing and the seal is damaged

Would it be easier (and cheaper) to just swap out a complete rear axle assembly? How do I tell which axle and ratio I have? Thanks!

There should be a tag attached to the rear diff.

it would be easier just to put a bearing and seal in. after all, youre only working on one corner of vehicle, not the whole rear!

Update:

I removed the rear driveshaft from my 82' Bronco and drove down the road using the front axle. 95% of my screaming road noise vanished.

And not only that, the Bronco will absolutely fly down the road now. So i'm assuming that some point in its life the Bronco had the wrong gear set or wrong ratio axle installed.

You should probably have all your bearings checked out the way it sounds; wheels, front, back. I would check the, drive lines, transfers, transmission and hubs while your at it to be safe. Then go to the engine compartment. Bronco Abuse.. Report it.
