I have a '73 EB with a 302 and a 3 speed automatic. The setup was perfect when i lived in the mountains and never drove above 60 mph. However i recently moved to denver and need to go faster. What is the easiest (and cheapest) way to swap in a four speed to hopefully keep me from burning up my hot 302 :)>-

Have you considered changing the differential gearing?

:)>-
I forgot to mention that the transmission is burnt and needs to be replaced....So I guess my question is: Is it possible to replace a 3-Speed Automatic Transmission with a 4-Speed,,,,and is it a good idea?

Anything is possible...

Check out the Advance Adapters website and online catalog.

There you will find the info (and parts) necessary to swap either an A4OD or even a GM 700R4 into your truck.

I would just do the WH NV4500 or ZF-5 speed swap if you are looking for highway driveability. Yeah, both are expensive, but you don't have to change gears in the axles. The NV & ZF are 5 speeds whereas the NP435 or the T-18 are 4 speeds and those are truck trannys. If you ever get a chance to come to Colo. Springs, PM me and I will take you over to a friend's junkyard full of EBs and he might even have a 4 or 5 speed tranny around. Any way you look at it, it is going to run you in the neighborhood of about $6-800 to either get your tranny rebuilt or as high as the WH NV swap at $2500. Just depends on what you want to spend.

Are you looking for a 4 or 5 speed auto or a manual? I might have misunderstood you, thinking that you wanted a manual. All those that I listed (NV, ZF, Np & T-18) are all manual trannys. If you want an auto, then you need to find a C4 or C6 AOD.

Four speed auto is gonna be almost as much work as putting in a four or five speed man tranny.

Almost any swap you do is going to change your front and rear d shaft lengths, your crossmember placement in the truck, and in some cases even not being able to use the factory crossmember.

The one trans that "fits like a glove" so to speak would be the NV 3550

which is a 5 speed manual trans.

If you don't want to make any other mods to your truck, your best bet may be to have the C-4 rebuilt.

That's an AOD and yes they do. Basically your only choices for putting a four-speed auto into your early Bronco are the AOD and the AODE/4R70W as I understand it. The E4OD/4R100 is too big and adapters aren't available. Now, my concern is how to adapt the D20 J-shifter to the AOD/AODE adapter. All I can get out of Advance Adapters is that it requires ingenuity.

Check www.tomsbroncoparts.com. They have good prices for the Advance Adapters adapter you will need. They also offer a crossmember, though your original can be modified to work (you need to make room for the adapter).
