I'm going to install a new catalytic converter would it be better to change both or just the rear?

Add you truck info to your signature, it makes answering questions easier when someone responds by knowing what you are driving  .

The older two CAT system is combined into a single unit in modern CATs, (if you look at a modern cat it has an air inject point in the center of it where the older had a inject point between the two individual units). To make it short, if I were installing that CAT, I'd replace the Y pipe, or gut the one just aft of where the two manifold pipes join. You may not like the sound of a gutted one, I have one I'm living with and it annoys me. It became an echo chamber and gives my exhaust a tinny sound.

Good luck,

:)>-

Summit racing has a high flow cat for about 225 that replaces both without the tinny sound Seabronc mentioned also you can get both the front and back convertors and have them welded in but both are not "required" even in NY with the emisions inspections I needed to replace the crossover portion of mine as it rotted thru between the ****** and first cat but unfortunately could not find it so am sitting on a high flow unit until I get the body work done
