i have an 83 thathas a growling noise seems to becoming from the middle of the truck, it starts very low pitched and withen seconds it high pitched.it doesnt do it all the time, and goes away when i accelerate, but the kicker is that it only does it when the front drive shaft is installed. anyone have any ideas what could cause this?

middle of the truck, only does it when front shaft is in. that means the noise is coming from your tcase. most likely, its low on fluid, allowing you to hear the movement of the gears. check your front hubs, they could be seized up and spinning the front shaft, putting excessive wear on the output bearings. whatever the problem is, it certainly has something to do with the transfer case and front axle

Its probably the t-case gears worn out. My 205 spins the front driveline just slightly with hubs unlocked. You can stop it by hand but its still turns while driving.

I doubt its the driveline or yokes as it would be more of a vibration. After you check the fluid level also inspect the driveline and yokes.

Your truck probably has a borg warner although I have seen some new process 203,s in those years . If its a borg and warner its an awesome T case they shift very nice and I have yet to break one . One bad thing I have seen rebuilding them is the main cause of failure I have seen is the oil pump pickup hose seems to get hard and brittle and once it breaks off the pump starves for oil locks up and starts to spin on the shaft throwing parts everywhere inside it ( Not good ) Other than that they are a very nice T case and easy to rebuild . I think I would pull it and take it apart to see whats going on in there , Theres a guy on ebay I think its transmission exchange company they have all the parts to rebuild them and I think you can rebuild the entire unit for around $300 . As long as there not alot of bad hard parts ( meaning parts that do not come in a standard rebuild ) If you have snap ring pliers and some patients you can easily rebuild it yourself . Just for a little incentive call a tranny shop and ask them how much to rebuild your T case just for labor place here tried to tell me it was $500 labor a few years ago thats why I do them myself now . :D /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

in an 83? i'd hesitate to say it has a BW in it. if i had to pick a case, i'd say it has a 208 or 205
