i blew my motor about a week ago and when i got my heads off i found a crack on the number 8 cyl. wall... i talked to one of my local machine shops and they said i would be better off and save money with a block from a junk yard rather than have them bore and sleve my current block. i found a complete 351 for $120, if i strip it down and use my crank and rods would that block work?

In a word, no. The crank won't work because the 302 & 351 have different sized main & rod bearings, so the 302 crank won't work in the 351 block & the 302 rods will only fit the 302 crank. Both engines have a 4.00" bore so in theory the pistons *would* swap but this being a junkyard engine the chances that it'll need to be bored are better than average and that will require a new set of pistons. If it's any consolation you *can* swap the cam, as long as they're both either roller or non-roller blocks. Another complication here would have been the balance. The internal balance of a 351W is the same as pre-81 302's (28.2 oz). The 5.0 has a 50 oz. unbalance, which means you cannot use the flexplate/flywheel or the harmonic balancer from the 302.
