grinding sound and 4wd wont work

i have a 95 bronco w/ push button 4x4. when i push the button i hear a gringing sound coming from my driverside front axle and the 4wd doesn't engage...sound like i'm hitting a small bump every few feet when in motion. any ideas?

A friend of mine has "E" shift transfercase in his Ranger....his did same and it was the shift solenoid that needed replaced. Maybe same for you.

Or a U-joint in the drive axle perhaps. Best way to find out is to take it apart.

i have the same problem rite now, on the drivers side- yes it's the auto locking hub. i just replaced axle joints that were worse though... check for vacuum leaks for the auto lock though- it may not be dis-engaging all the way
