I am currently running a 23 gallon wild horses efi tank on my 77. I plan on using the existing gas vent hose. I know I should run the vent to the charcoal filter in the engine compartment but thats where my engine harness enters the firewall. Is it imperative to run the vent line to the filter?

Depends on how safe you will feel with fumes in other places. I know my '74 used to have evap lines running from both tanks into a little bottle right next to the front tank filler tube and then onto the charcoal canister. Seemed like a pretty elaborate system for a low tech truck so it is gone now and my stuff goes to the canister directly.

I would advise that you stick to the canister. It's not really a big deal, just more stuff to put back on and run lines to. Plus it prevents moisture from getting into the tank as opposed to just putting a diff breather/filter on the line. It's a pretty safe way to keep fumes out of everywhere else also. You don't have to run the lines to the carb.
