Sounds like you got a unit for an  engine with a mechanical pump on the engine block.  The 3 pin connector has one for the tank pump, one for the sender, and a ground.

In that case, you did get the correct part for a carbed engine.  If you are converting from a in tank pump, which the 302 had,  to a mechanical pump you need to make sure that the correct wire from your truck's pigtail goes to the sending unit.  Also you need to eliminate the high pressure pump on the frame rail.

If you want to eliminate the need to drop your tank in the future try this:  http://broncozone.com/topic/12329-gas-sender-unit-access-panel/

Wiring diagram with a mechanical pump,  it shows both the F-series dual tank and single tank  connections.
