i have an 82 with a 351 and a new edlebrock preformer 600 cfm. getting no gas in a new see thru filter' put on a new pump same thing. on startup enough fuel to make it around the block before starving out.checked the lines from pump to carb ok' removed line from pump to tank & blew air to tank , lotsa bubbles. once again around the block. connected an elec. pump to supply line from tank and filled my 2 gal. gas can in about 2 min. re connected to fuel filter drove around the block and coasted into the driveway there is no line filters from the tank to the pump and i have not seen any debris in the filter or the gas its 101 outside so im inside having a gin&tonic any ideas ?

Try reversing the fuel filter.

Have you checked the float tank adjustment?

Check the fuel pressure?, it should be around 7 psi.

As far as rubber hose, if it is new, don't worry about how much you have, I've been running my Holley 4bbl for over a year with all rubber from the tank to the carb with no problem. The size might make a difference though, mine is 1/4" ID.

If you let it idle, does the filter stay full?

The mechanical pump may not be runnig up to par if the concentric lobe that drives it is excessively worn.

When you added the electric pump, did you bypass the mechanical pump? If not, I'd bypass it and see how it runs. If the electric pump is supplying 7psi it should be able to keep up with a carb at least in normal street cruising.

Do you have a hot running engine? If so, you could be generating a vapor lock. One way to keep the carb cooler is to use stainless steel bolts to hold it on including stainless steel bolts for the intake manafold.

Ok, that is the best I can do right off hand.

Good luck,

:)>-

there is about 7" of hose in the line ahead of the rear axle. the rest , line to pump , pump to filter filter to carb is new . the fuel filter has a flow direction indicator i bypassed the mech. pump i have not measured the pressure. yet. when i put air into the fill tube it filled the filter once but when i tried it again it did nothing !! could blocking off the egr or vacume lines cause this kinda crap ?? thanks for any help.

i'm gonna have another g&t

No, blocking off those lines have no bearing on it. On tha 7 " of hose, check it out real good, I had a mouse chew a hole in the top of mine resulting in poor fuel delivery. Pictyure of mouse dammage attached, he must have gotten a mouth full of gas as his teeth just broke a pin hole in the line :)) . Also, check about 1/2 way up the chassis, there normally is a rubber joint between steel lines there. Also, like Cl10Racer said, if it is old it could be swollen and restricting fuel flow. Rubber definately takes more care than steel and if I wern't so lazy, I'd rerun it in steel.

Good luck,

:)>-

I had this exact same problem when I got my 82 351w running. I converted to an electric fuel pump after my mechanical pumps (yes, 2 of them) stopped being able to keep up after I had been drivign around for a week or so (I have a 650 cm carb).

Is your electric fuel pump mounted close to and slightly below the gas tank? That's the recommended installation point for electric fuel pumps.

A little off the subject, (sorry Viper), but how difficult is it to convert from a mechanical fuel pump to an electronic one? I have an '81 6 cylinder.

It's easy to convert. I capped off the in-out lines from the mechanical pump until I can find a block-off plate, and then mounted the pump, connected it to the fuel line and wired it. You will need a regulator, wiring w/relay and a oil pressure check switch so that the pump won't run if there's no oil pressure. Summit has a universal pump/regulator, the relay and the oil pressure switch.
