I was quoted that just for a tank drop for my '88 with the fuel pump in the tank that parts are $180 - $200 and the tank drop alone is another $200. How hard is it to actually drop the tank and than how do i get to the fuel pump if its in the tank? I would just replace the whole sending modul and float so i'd have a working gas guage again while i was at it.

It isn't all that difficult, but is dangerous, don't forget you are working with a highly volital substance and even empty the tank is full of fumes, one spark and it's all over. I usually leave something like that to someone who knows what he is doing. If you check Jeff's Bronco Graveyard catalog for 80 and up http://www.broncograveyard.com I believe it will be any where up to $300.00 depending on what you get and what tank it is for.

I didn't realize that it was hazardous, i figured only if i were to be welding around it or something. So in other words $200 tank drop and around $500 would be good for a fuel pump? That just seems ridiculous to me though....

don't take it somewhere. dropping the tank is not difficult, just try to run the truck around till its low on gas, or drain the tank. find two floor jacks, unbolt the tank, and let her down. you'll have to disconnect the filler neck and fuel lines, but that isnt hard. dropping the tank and replacing the pump really is not hard at all, its just a pain in the ass. I'm not saying you have to do this, but i cut an access panel in the floor of the truck so if i ever have to replace the pump, I can just flip open the hatch and pull the pump right there. no need to drop it ever again

It's inside the tank if you have an EFI engine. Some trucks had two pumps, one inside the tank (low pressure), and one outside the tank (high Pressure) mounted under the truck.

Quick question on disconnecting the gas lines from the tank. I replaced the tank in my '92 last night and had an awful time disconnecting the two gas lines. These were a push on type with about six internal clips in each one. I ended up making a tool by cutting plastic from a spray can cap and wrapping it around the line and pushing it into the connector to push the little clips back.

I am assuming there is an easier/smarter way to do this, what is it???

I work at Jiffy **** and we have this little clamp tool with two round ends on it we use only on changing Ford fuel filters, i wonder if this is the same kind of tool you'd need, because with that tool the gas lines pop right off.

both. the pump unit itself is inside the tank, but you can access the flat metal plate that hold it in place from the top of the tank. thats how you remove it

yup. you can buy that special little tool at any auto parts store. Ford just HAD to do away with the duckbill clips that worked fine

i think that homemade deal sounded pretty good to me all you are really trying to do is get the spring over the bump on the fuel line. if it works use it. i got a set from the parts store though. it was 5 - 10.00 for the set.

Shit I think I should probably replace mine before it starts getting to cold around these parts and I'm stuck on the side of the road somewhere with a bad fuel pump.
