Sorry if this is a stupid question but does a fuel pump continuously run when the motor is running. i ask because i am getting a high pitched squeal from the rear end of y truck and i believe it is coming form the fuel tank. Any ideas. Ohh and it started happening after i had to use a hammer on a bracket i mounted in the back for a subwoofer. it is mounted a little to the left of the tank so i figured i may have done some damage to the pump by beating on the bracket.

I'm pretty sure it does run all the time unless some magic is happening e.g. you have a gnome back there pumping gas up to the engine. :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

Had a '74 Chevy back in the day and it had a mechanical fuel pump on it that attached to the engine block. The engine itself would push the pump and deliver gas to the carb that way. So, as long as the engine was running the pump was pumping.

I'm thinking it's no different here just that the pump is now electric.

I have a whine that comes from the rear of the truck which I've attributed to the fuel pump but it's not a squeal. By any chance does the pitch change when you rev the engine? I know that you can have interference in your sound system from the engine and it gets amplified through the speaker. Disconnect the sub and see if it's still there.

Anybody else have some thoughts here?

no its definitely not engine noise coming thru the speakers and no it does not change pitch whilst revving the engine as far as i can tell anyhow. It also doesnt seem to affect performance or anything. its just annoying as ****. also it is not so much a squeal as a whine. thanks in advance

Yes the pump is supposed to run continuously while the engine is running. The whine is probably comming from the pump. When you say you had to use a hammer on this bracket did it involve bending the floor of the truck down ? If so you may have pinched or bent the fuel line comming from the pump there fore restricting the flow and making the pump work harder and whine from the added strain. Otherwise it could just simply be that the pump motor is getting old and about to quit.
