I have an 88 Ford Bronco Eddie Bauer Edition 5L. I've had it for about 4 years and havent had it in 4x4 so i decided i would try it out the other day and just try climbing some hills by my house. 4x4 worked great but now when i put it back in 2 wheel drive and put the hubs in free mode the front drive shaft still turns when i move. I jacked up the front end thinking one of the hubs might be bad but i could spin them freely w/o the drive shaft turning. I crawled underneath it and i can still turn the drive shaft w/ my hand when its parked but it still moves when i drive it around town. Does anyone know what this may mean and is it ok to drive it like this?

Its normal if you can still turn it by hand. Its probably always slightly turned but you never noticed it. Did someone see it turning? Its not under load or in gear, its just the internals spinning inside for rear wheel drive and makes the driveline spin ever so slightly. If you could grab it while moving down the road it would stop. But I don't recomend trying that one.

Its normal, I agree with Broncoholics. Its the same as with an auto transmission, if you put it in neutral and lift the back tires of the ground they will still turn ever so slightly

I gotta ask how do you know it is turning unless some one ran over you with your truck not trying to be a smart ass but almost thought this was a joke post at first glance

When I shift from 4wd back into 2wd, it stays in 4 unless I put it in reverse then it pops out and is in 2wd. No trouble moving the shifter lever but it doesnt disengage, is that a big deal?

If you have automatic hubs, that is the procedure to get them disengaged. Read the sticker on the reverse side of the driver side sun visor.
