When driving, I hear a clicking noise that speeds up the faster I go. It almost sounds like a card in a bike spoke. I was thinking maybe a body panel a little loose, but it feels/sounds (my idle foot feels it when it's on the floorboard) like it's under the driver/passanger compartment. Also, the 4x4 doesn't kick in. I hit the button, hear a click-click, the light dims a little and the rpms drop a hair, but the light doesn't go on and the wheels don't lock. :( /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

Any ideas?

From what you are saying about not going into 4x4, it sounds like the shift motor or the connection to it is bad. The clicking noise may be from the front axle turning, perhaps the transfer case is stuck in 4x4 not out of 4x4. The best way to check if you are completely out of 4x4 is to crawl under the truck and turn try to the drive shaft by hand. It should turn freely if the hubs are unlocked and the transfer case is in 2WD. If it doesn't turn then it is either in 4x4 or the hubs are engaged.

Good luck,

:)>-

The shaft does spin, and it clicks when I move it.

what year is the truck and are they auto hubs (more commen with the shift on the fly set-up

It's a 90 and does have automatic hubs. Speaking of which, I'm thinking of switching them to manual hubs. Any idea how difficult that might be?

to change them to manual hubs in all honesty is easier than replacing or repairing the auto hubs let alone ALOT cheaper

it sounds like the shift motor is shot or on the outside chance the control mech. in the RF kick panel

I disconnected the shift motor in hopes the sound would go away, but now I hear the sound in the back as well. When I get under the truck, the rear drive shaft doesn't have play (up, down, left or right) but it does spin about a quarter of a turn (engine running, in neutral, with e-brake on.) I'm really conncerned that this is something big and bad, but I need the truck as a daily driver for work. I don't need the truck falling apart on the way to work, and I don't really have the money to pay someone $75 an hour plus parts (plus whatever the markup is) to solve this.

South Jersey, near the Berlin area. I'm going to replace the joints, just to be on the safer side of things. Anything and everything is greatly appreciated.

Thanks for everything, I owe you one.
