My Bronco failed emissions today. It only failed on oxides of nitrogen, the limit is 5.00 and it was at 5.89. Any who they told me it could be the EGR valve. When I got home I hooked up to my code reader and the trucks computer had fault 33 in its stored faults. Wich is EGR valve not closing properly. So here is my question..................Should I change the EGR valve or could it be something else effecting it. I don't really know anything about the EGR valve and am really clueless here. So what do I do next?????

yo!

An EGR valve that has failed, refuses to open (or the EGR passageway in the manifold is clogged) will allow elevated NOX emissions and may also cause a detonation (spark knock) problem. Dirty EGR valves can sometimes be cleaned, but if the valve itself is defective it must be replaced. Before you buy a new EGR Valve, check vacuum hoses to the EGR, EVR (Vacuum Regulator)

Remove and Inspect the EGR valve for signs of diaphragm damage or leakage, contamination, unusual wear, carbon deposits, binding, and other damage. Service as necessary (including cleaning the unit with carb/throttle body cleaner). Clear continuous memory codes. Rerun tests.

GL!

Ditto to Meisk5's comment. An EGR that fails to close is usually caused by carbon deposits in the valve end. If the EGR is not otherwise defective, it is often possible to clean out the carbon deposit and reuse it. Your other option is to put a new on on.

Good luck,

:)>-
