I have a 72 bronco with a 302 have been rebuilding just about everything I just thought I was done with all mechanical problems but now this. So far its happened three time first time I was driving along about 50 miles an hour and just lost power for around 10 seconds then all was well second time 3 weeks later or so pulled up to a stop light and engine died and would not start until finally I held the gas pedal down while cranking engine and 15 seconds later it started and for 10 minutes or so it gave me issues trying to die and i kept it running but barely then no problem at all ran great now today i pulled up to a stop light and the idle which is normally 1200 was up and down 1000 to 1100 then i took off from the light ran fine for 20 seconds and didnt die until i let off the gas i coasted to a stop turned the key and it fired right away and ran fine all the way home. I have replaced both fuel tanks and all components, new points, new coil, and lots of new wires, and rebuilt the carb. please any ideas im at a loss

"Hi boone., welcome...,

This is a common issue however, not unique to the EB. Changing tanks req. disturbing fuel lines which tend to send "stuff" down stream. Sometimes catching in filter., sometimes lodging in critical parts like fuel pump or carb. The fuel pump has check valves & debris stuck in them releases pressure.

Thanks to the goofy fuels these days., I've had fuel lines melt internally & completely plug filters. (I use a see-thru filt. before the pump & another before the carb.) Still., some small bits of goo made it to the carb fuel bowl.

Having said that., you know it's a fuel or elect. issue. You need it to quit/stall out to determine which. Then, check for spark at plug.. &/or look down air horn to see if accel. pump will squirt a steady stream.

A can of starting fluid onboard helps determine if it's a fuel issue.

Another test is to "hot-wire" the coil temporarily (may need a ballast resistor in line) & see if prob. goes away. This req. disconnection when veh. is at rest.

If this solves the prob. then there's something amiss in the ignition.

In some cases., the key-switch itself can lose contact.

HTH.,

B

Sounds pretty "mechanical" to me.... :D/

The pump can be pressure tested. Why is the idle so high...? Should be 8-9 hundred.

Do fill-in your (sig. & profile) info. pages (shows ev. post as mine does below) for more accurate help. :-B

To be honest I havent set idle since I set the timing and new points and condenser was at about 1900rpm on tach but really about 900 the guy I bought it from about 2 months ago told me he ran it around 6000-6500 rpm all the time needless to say he didnt know aftermarket tachs have a cylinder selector on the back it was on 4 cylinder lol. I havent had time to put in new pump yet, rather than test old parts I decided that with this rig im going to just put in new if I find myself questioning any part even a little bit. Funny thing is that alredy caused me issues I put in a new headlight switch and it wouldnt run the headlights they kept flickering after warming up took me a little while to figure out the problem and i put in some relays and new high output plugs.
