I've read on other forums people mentioning that they removed their EGR valve from their broncos. Well I recently discovered that my EGR is going bad and I was wondering what happens if you completely remove it from the equation, or what the point of one actually is.

The purpose of the EGR is to reintroduce exhaust gag into the combustion cycle which (believe it or not) lowers combustion temperature and reduces the formation of Nitrous Oxides. The timing of this and the amount is dependent on things like engine speed, vacuum, backpressure, altitude, throttle position and coolant temperature. Basically it only injects exhaust gas during normal cruise conditions but not at idle, cold engine or kickdown RPM range.

That having been said, you will most likely fail emissions testing if your state requires them for your year of truck. If not, they sell kits that allow you to remove them and keep your computer satisfied.

Good luck,

:)>-

PS

That is the only function that requires the dreded backpressure  .

Someone explain this to me than, my exhaust manifold on the passenger side has a giant crack completely around it, nearly a perfect circle. What kind of effect does this have on my EGR and the way the bronco runs, besides causing a nasty exhaust leak?

my bronco has the same problem with the exhaust. "the 351 tick" i call it because they all do it at some point. no problems with performance here and no check engine light....... :glare:

Mine has a 302, but actually sounds like a lifter but is really the exhuast leak.

I doubt that it has any effect on your EGR. However, if it is causing a significant loss of back pressure, then the EGR might be affected since the EGR uses back pressure as one of it's inputs.

How could I tell if I was having a significant loss of back pressure? Would it be a really long stall when i accelerate, which i have a terrible time with, i figured it was caused my a clogged cat....

If the EGR is stuck open you will have running problems at other than cruise, and yes it might show up that way. See my previous post. However, a clogged Cat would also result in poor power also because of increased back pressure. In a high performance vehicle, for ex. a dragster, everything is done to eliminate back pressure.

Back pressure is taken advantage of by car manufacturers to meet emissions law requirements and use it to open the EGR along with the vacuum signal. The truck would run just fine if the EGR never opened, the only effect would be on the generation of Nitrus Oxide in the exhaust.

I just had my timing adjusted and everything checked and my mechanic who did everything said my EGR is what caused my Bronco to keep dieing that and my throttle was sticking open. So I wonder if my replacing the exhaust manifold it might run a lot better, if not, i'm only out $80 and i dont have an exhaust leak anymore.

I would change it just because it is a hazard to you by leaking Carbon Monoxide into the cab.
