Never had to do one but my brothers '67 is seeping a bit so time to "bone up" on the tricks.

Hub off, spindle off, ...... does the knuckle need to be removed or can you reach it thru the hole in the knuckle..?

If, in fact, it has to come off, (knuckle) what parts are a "must" to replace while appart.

It's a super-clean, west coast rig with low miles. Doubt its ever even been in water. It's a D-30 with king-pins.

Looks pretty straight-forward..... any special tools or pit-falls..?

Hey Bully Bob,

If that D30 is anything like my last one... it has inner AND outer axle seals.

If you have an axle seal leak, the inner seal is at fault, the outer is only there to keep crap OUT of the axle tube.

You will need to remove the carrier to replace the inner seals.

Bully, the Dana 30 has inner and outer axle seals as well as an axle "guide" near the diff. The outer can be replaced without removing the steering knuckle, as long as you can get the old one out.

This would not be a bad time to check your kingpin bearings and grease them (if they don't need replacing). Be sure and use a new kingpin seal.

If you're going to replace the inner axle seal then you'll need to pull the diff. If you don't do any heavy duty off-roading then drilling and tapping your kingpins to make the bearing "geaseable" might be something you'd want to do. This way you can keep water, mud, etc. from getting into the kingpin cup and staying there. Just keep them greased religiously and force everthing up past the seals.

If you (need) or decide to rebuild the king pins....then don't delay, because the "dampener kit" is nearly nonexistent now.
