Does anyone have any experience swapping a NP 205 behind a E4OD? I thought I saw a thread in here somewhere, where someone was working on it. I've called around and got every answer from "it's a direct swap" to "there's no way in ****", but these were all guesses. I'm sick of my BW-1356! I don't care if it's a good transfer case or not. I'm not a big fan of push button transfer cases.

Also I'm redoing my interior, and I want to update from a front bench to buckets, using peices from an Eddie Baur model('91). Will I be able to use the center console and still be able to use the np205, or will the levers be in the way?

Thanx

Ford never changed there Tcase bolt pattern you can take a 1978 NP203 and bolt it to a 1996 E4OD the splines are the same and the bolt pattern is the same so yes it will fit the shifter on the other hand you may have to be more creative but Im sure it can be done . The transfer case is the tranny mount in the older ones so if you did swap like that you would have to make mounts to support the Tcase . 1980 and up the tranny is supported and the Tcase hangs off the back . I dont think Id mount one of the heavy cast iron ones off the back of the aluminum tranny without supporting it . The shifter out of an 87 to 96 is what you probably want to find if you want to keep the use of the console they mount on the side of the tranny tunnel and all of the cabs 87 to 96 have an indent stamped in the floor where the shifter goes even if it had push button . :D /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

blade26 about the bolt pattern you may be right but i have a friend that put an NP205 behind his c-6 in an 85 f-250 and he had to make a couple modifications to the transfer case i believe. I dont think it was anything with the bolt pattern but i know he had to trim some peices away in order to make clearance

There was a recent thread about some difficulty mating a NP205 to an AOD, due to the different t-case to tranny adapter for the NP205 vs. the B-W 13-56. Since the NP205 case is cast iron and much heavier than the B-W13-56, you want to use the NP205 adapter. It is also iron & notched on the side for the NP205 shifter rails.

While the NP205 is more stronger than the B-W 13-56, the low range is only 1.69:1 vs. 2.72:1 for the B-W. There is a manual-shift version of the B-W 13-56, which you can find in the local salvage yard for $300-$400. You can find more info in the "How To/Tech Articles Forum", just look for my link to "Miesk5HomePage", and look at the transmission section.

I'm helping a guy do the manual swap for the electric B-W 13-56. The main concern is to get the shift linkage for your tranny, like an E4OD. Each t-case has a different linkage assembly depending on the tranny it bolts to. The back end of the adapter/extension housing that the t-case bolts to has a common bolt pattern for all Ford t-cases, so you can swap any of the t-cases used in 70's-90's Ford trucks. Aside from the NP205, there is the NP208, B-W 13-45 and B-W 13-56. You'll also find a link to t-case tech in the Tech forum.

ANd if you do the swap to a NP205, I don't think the center console will interfere. The shift pattern is 4L-N-2Hi-4Hi, with 4L to the front under the dash. I don't think the lever goes as far back in 4Hi as the later model t-cases do.

I just knew the bolt pattern and input shaft splines were the same . I have never had a problem with the borg and warner T cases there lighter and I havent had one pop yet . When I had my 83 3/4 ton I had 40 inch groundd hawgs on it with 3.55 gears and a 4 speed with creeper tranny and I beat the **** out of that thing and it never gave it up and is still a good working T case Ive had it for 13 yrs of abuse so I personally dont see the need for the heavy cast iron new process ones but thats my opinion . And on the shift linkage for the newer ones it usually says on it the tranny it is for and its just a length difference . :D /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" /> Justshootme84 I think I have the linkage for and AOD and an E4OD if you need one of them for your swap .

im on my 2nd manual shift 1356 in my 96 f150...its on 31" bfg 3.55s open with the 300 and 5spd. between that, the ttb, and the 8.8 rear i bought a 79 bronco to play with instead. with that bw case check the chain every now and then to make sure it hasnt strechted and watch the rear seal on that slip yoke...theyre really simple to take apart and inspect. good luck

Obviously there are going to be 13-56s that last for ever, but when I do a SAS, I don't want that to be the wink link. You can't deny the strength of a NP205.

I've talked to people that have done the swap(different forum), but they were using it in conjunction with the Klune V. Does anyone know if using the Klune V is the only way to perform the swap? The peopl I talked to already had it, so that's why they used it. I just dont want to spend the extra $1600+/- for something that isnt going to get used to it's fullest potential.

This is my 2 cents opinion. IF you swap to the NP205 it will be bullet-proof, but the E4OD will not. I have seen a couple of those swaps where the transmission case cracked due to the excess weight of the NP205. I also think that the B-W 13-56 is more than adequate for modest 4wheeilin'. There is a mod for the oil pump mount to strengthen it, as I see that as the weak link in that model. From what I know about the KluneV, it's a pretty ******** offroad addition. But you may need that to protect the E4OD. If you need more info, check out the Tech Articles forum for my link to "Miesk5 HomePage" and go to the transmission section.

In the cases where you saw the transmission case crack, were there any cross members built to support the NP205? I think thats way too much weight to just have hanging off the back end of the tranny, with no support.

Yes, you have to use the NP205 crossmember to hold it up. I think it was just the extra weight and strength of the NP205 that can crack the tranny housing, which was designed for a lighter, aluminum case. What I've seen is from mud drags and truck pulls, so you may be fine with a stock motor.

Well I'm definately not going to be doing mud drags, or truck pulls, but I'm also not going to have a stock motor. This payday, I'm putting a down payment on a 427 small block from Keith Craft Racing. I've been talking with that guy for about a month, and he's got a pretty awesome setup for me, but when it's all said and it'll still be a pump gas, streetable motor. I'm gonna try to have it done by next may, but that's going to be pushing it. I'll probably need to make another deployment to Iraq to get that tax free money. In the mean time tho, I'd like to beef up the rest of my drivetrain...Hence the 205. I just dumped about $2600 into my E4OD, so it should be good to go, but now I need to look into doing a soild axle swap with D60 front and a 10.25 rear.

Basically I got a lot of things going on right now.
