Dying problem

This has been bothering me for a while now. I rebuilt and cleaned out my carburetor and had it tuned by a mechanic, stuck it back on the engine

and was able to fire it right up. Later on my starter went out (was bad) so I replaced it and went for a test drive. Once again truck fired up nice

and idled fine but gas peddle was sticking so I pulled it toward me (was sitting in seat) and the engine died automatically. Could this be a

carburetor, fuel or maybe an accelerator cable problem? I thought maybe I just need a new cable so I decided to take it for a test drive. I was

able to drive it up the street for about two blocks and when coming to a stop sign the truck died.

I've asked everyone I could around me and no one can help, hopefully someone has gone through this or know how to fix it.

Well you cant really dial in a carb to its full potential when its not on an engine. Get a new cable if its sticking. Then if its still dying on you turn you idle up a little. Your mechanic probably just set all of the adjustments to a "default" type of setting.

Yup! It sounds like the cable was sticking when you installed it. Make sure the pedal and cable are working freely then set the idles up according the the procedure listed on the radiator support. There are two idle speed adjustments, one for cold idle and one for curb idle. The curb idle is set by the ***** on the carb linkage where the pedal hooks. A comfortable idle in gear with the brake on is usually around 550 RPM which on an automatic trany car is around 1100 RPM when not in gear.

Ok so I replaced the cable, this time what it's doing is once you start the truck if your not accelerating the truck dies, no idle time. I need to know what screws to turn in order to get the correct idle mixture. Money is tight so if someone can explain how to do it myself id appreciate it.

Here's what you need to do, if its your throttle position then what you have to do is find this ***** on your carburator

it should be behind the throttle linkage with a spring on it between the head and the plate its in. its the shinny one on the pic just behind the linkage. if you move the throttle linkage by hand you should be able to see where it hits when it closes. The linkage will hit the end of the ***** to set the idle position, as you turn in the ***** the throttle linkage should open slightly.

here is what you do

if you have a tach then have some one sit in the truck when its running, before you get them to start turn the ***** until you see a little bit of movement in the linkage. when you start the truck you are going to have the engine start and rev up a little bit, you should get the engine warm and make sure the choke is off before any fine tuning, by turning the ***** out you should be able to hear the rpm's dropping, go very slow and have the person inside tell you when you are almost at between 800 and 1100 rpm. then fine tune it by getting them to put it in gear and holding the brake, adjust it down or up as needed to get a smooth low idle. roughly 500 to 600 rpm.

If you don't have a tack then you will have to play it by ear. if you know the truck well you should be able to find a spot that sounds right in and out of gear.

I drive a stick and I leave mine at 650 to 750 when off choke
