dumb question

i am trying to remove the ball on the 4x4 selector lever but can figure out how to get it off any help would be nice thanks guys

Pull really hard. Most of the balls are just pressed on, with the shifter shaft having splines on it. Dpends on the year model you have, it may be threaded and able to turn counter-clockwise to remove it. Post your year model or transfer case model, and we'll be able to help for sure. Most of my rigs have the opposite problem - the ball is so loose that it often comes off in your hand when shifting, JSM84

On my 85 it has a small allen set ***** in the collar...might look and see if yours has one....good luck... >-
