I need some info about swapping drivetrain parts. I'm taking a ride tomorrow to look at a parts truck (91 F150) and I'm thinking about swapping in the transmission & transfer case. My 88' Bronco has an AOD & BW1356. The F150 has an E4OD and while it should have the same BW1356 I'm not sure if it's mechanical or electric. Can anytone tell me what's involved in this swap ? From what I could find the E4OD is like 17" or 18" longer so I'm guessing I'll need to swap over the crossmember as well. Without having it here to see yet or having done it before I'm kinda in the dark. The F150 is a supercab w/a longbed so I'm pretty sure the frames aren't even close but I was hoping that they'd be the same from the front bumper to just past the door but if the E4OD crossmember sits further back I get into no-man's land.

What I'd really like to hear is that it's a fairly straightforward bolt in and that I'll be able to get away with swapping in the F150 front driveshaft & cutting down the rear shaft to fit the Bronco wheelbase. The F150 also sports a 5.8L which has some sort of spark problem but as long as I swap over the computer that one's just a bolt-in isn't it ?

This is my first venture into the land of EFI, the only major builds I've done have all been carburated, They were all "run 3 wires to the distrubitor, make sure it has fuel & it'll fire" sort of thing. I started losing interest when you needed to use your multimeter to do more than check continuity but now it seems the electronics are inescapable so I may as well jump in & the best way to learn is to do it. Oh, jeez that makes me think, does the E4OD have it's own computer or does it piggyback onto the 5.8L's ? Do I maybe *have* to swap everything (engine, tranny & Xfer) and if the BW1356 is electric how hard is it to either swap in the parts from the donor or to retro the electric to a manual ?

I know this covers a lot of ground but I need to get some idea of what this entails before I go throwing $$$ around & filling my driveway with trucks that don't run.

What's wrong with the AOD and BW 1356?
Well, I'm not quite sure yet since I haven't gotten it running, but it's got 197K on it & the guy I bought it from was a little fishy about it. He told me the filter needed to be replaced but that got me to wondering how he *knew* the filter needed replacing unless he'd broken it open to look at it, but who in their right mind goes thru the hassle of opening up a transmission without bothering to replace (or at least *clean*) the filter? So I'm guessing it doesn't shift so hot or has some other problem he was hoping to deflect with a pre-emptive statement like that. Ya gotta understand, this is a $400 truck and it really hasn't seen much maintenance as best I can tell (****, the last owner is serving time for shooting @ his wife from *inside* the cab, the hole in the windshield has powder-burns ). On top of that I'm looking @ potential ring-gear problems so there's a good chance the tranny has to come out anyways.

I wanted the parts truck for the windshield & a lot of the interior parts and figured that being a few years newer and not owned by someone quite so insane there was a fair chance the transmission was in better shape and I could get a few years out of it. As for the transfer case, well, you've got me there. That's just a case of me being lazy, if I can pull everything out as a unit & not have to split the Xfer case from the transmission then that's just more time that I have to drink a beer & scratch my belly.

E4OD wiring harness is going to be different as well, the AOD is a hydraulic trans and the E4OD is electric so you will have to gut the wiring harness as well. I dont know how the overdrive is deactivated on the 91's but on the 92 and later, they had the switch on the end of the column shifter, you may have to get the column out it as well. ECU will be different as well between the two. Just a few things to think about.

Correct, the E4OD shift points are controlled by the ECU, whereas the AOD is not (operator controls it). And while the 91 EC/LB F-150 will have the B-W 13-56, it will have a slip yoke rear output. The driveshafts will aslo have a different yoke size than your Bronco. The swap is alot more work than pulling the engien and tranny. JSM84

Ok, I guess I'd better keep looking then. Thanks for the info, saved me a 45min drive.
