I have a 1991 5.8 Windser with Speed density fuel injection. I have removed the smog pump and short belted. I removed the EGR, TAB and TAD solinoids and lots of vacuum hoses. I used the "EGR Elininator" from RJM along with their block of plates and plugs. I am getting codes 33 , expected and 81 , air diverter solenoid circuit fault, 82, integrated relay control module and 84 EGR vent.

I hope to install headers and duel exhaust with no cats. I understand I need to retain the O2 sensers.

Has anyone else been down this road with similar results?

Sounds more like smogging than desmogging hope you don't live in California. The O2s are there to read the oxygen content of the exhaust so the computer can decide how to set the mixture.

Good luck,

Hey Jimi,

Removing all those items, and the others you intend to will result in permanent trouble codes from the ECM. It's likely that you will have unrepairable driveability issues also. That is unless you reinstall all the equipment you removed or dissabled.

What is the purpose of your "desmogging"? You will not notice any horsepower gains.

yo JIMI,

Eliminator Installation Manual; DTC 33 EGR valve opening not detected; "When performing computer Self-Test after installing this kit it is normal to get code...The computer is acknowledging that the EGR is permanently closed. This is your desired result.

Ryan wrote elsewhere; If you got code 32 then its working, and the timing is safe from EGR corrections. The EGR eliminator is guaranteed to turn off the engine light on 1986-93 5.0L Mustangs, other vehicles might turn on the light even when its safe..." Ryan wrote in FSB, Code 33/332 is the desired result, if the light still comes on you'll need the $300-$500 chip. Or just live with the light!

NOTE: This device is not intended for pollution controlled vehicles. Local, State, and Federal

laws may prohibit the removal or disabling any emission control device on any emission

applicable vehicle.

Thanks for the input.

My thoughts were:

Unburden the stock engine

Help it breath

Add performance parts

Headers

Dual Exhaust

Intake

Heads

Possible MAF swap "although I see others have built engines that ran OK within Speed Density parameters"

This is not a daily driver it is a hunting rig!

Detroit lockers

Warn hubs were on my list too.

It is unlifted with 32x 11.5 50 15 Falkin Rocky Mountain tires "minor rub"

I drove it 500 miles on a deer hunting trip with the check engine light on and averaged 12MPG with a high of 15 on the highway !

Hey Jimi,

The thought patern you have to doing these mods are well intended, but they are more guided to increasing the efficiency of an engine running at a higher rpm, and needing to draw max HP.

Being you are using this as a hunting truck, go for reliability, and durability. ( It sucks being stuck in the woods.)

You will notice practically no advantage in wheeling off road with those mods.

Riding trails to go hunting can cause a strain on the cooling system, and the suspension, and trans. Put your resources to improving those systems.

Good Luck

I removed everything and anything involved with pollution control on my 88" 351w and added resistors as suggested on fireguy's site. No check engine light, no codes. engine is happy and runs well.
