I have been looking for information for the rearend in my 83 Bronco and have become alittle confused, maybe someone can clear this up?

What is the difference between:

1) 3rd member

2) Differential

3) Rearend

The reason I am asking what seems like such a stupid question is some sites seem to refer to differential and 3rd member as being the same thing and other sites don't. Any help would be appreciated.

1) The rearend usually is the complete unit. Housing, axles, differential, and ring, and pinion.

2) The differential is the center section, usually not including the ring, and pinion. this is the unit that the ring gear bolts to, and the pinion gear meshes with the ring, and the axles slide into.

3) 3rd member is a term usually used for 9" carriers, as the entire unit can be removed with the ring, and pinion installed, and setup can be done on a bench instead of in the rearend.

Glad to hear from you and since I haven't heard from you before welcome to the B. Zone. What kind of gears, engine, and transmission are you running in your Bronco?
