The cruise works on the 88 I just bought but wont shut off by hitting the brake,the stop lights work so could it still be the stop light switch or is there anything else I should check.

The cruise control has a vacuum dump valve on the brake pedal. You should see a vacuum hose attached to it. If it isn't there then someone has bypassed it. The vacuum line runs from the speed control servo through the fire wall to the dump valve. If it is there, make sure the valve is opened when the pedal is pressed. You may have the adjust it.
