So I've had my '95 Bronco for about 2 years now and there's been an on going issue that hasn't meant a lot to me. First off the speedometer doesn't work as smoothly as it should. When I accelerate the needle will increase at a steady rate and then just randomly start to bounce up about 2 to 10mph. I had thought maybe the sensor in the rear diff was bad and replaced it, but no luck. Also, when I try to use the cruise control it does basically the same thing as the speedometer. It'll go steady for a second or two and then speed up real fast and then slow down. I haven't used it since. It sure would be nice to be able to use it and have it work properly though. Any thoughts on what's up?

Thanks

Bryan

It didn't look like there was any contamination in the diff. I haven't heard any noise from it either. Sometime this week when I get a chance I'll take a look just to make sure.

Since both functions depend on the speed sensor to operate, I'd first check the harness from the speed sensor back to the cab. You may have a rub through high resistance short or an bad connector, (take them apart and make sure there is no corrosion and then re-seat them). It is possible you got a flaky sensor from whom ever you bought it from. Places like Auto Zone have a reputation for that with parts. I'd buy them from one of the reputable online sources or the local Ford dealer.

Good luck,

:)>-

I bought the sensor from my local Ford store, so I'd like to think that the sensor isn't a flake.

you might want to have your PSOM checked, especially since its erratic and the cruise control feeds off of it

Pointer Waiver TSB 96-21-11 for 92-96; "...The speedometer needle may waver and/or a light surge may occur on some vehicles when speed control is used at highway speeds between 80-113 km/h (50-70 mph). This may be due to slight dents/chips in either the exciter ring or the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) and air gaps between the VSS and the exciter ring..."
