my engine needs a new crank shaft. now with the crank, are there only 4 spots for all the rods to connect or are there 8? i've been looking at napa and summit, they both have them but there only showing 4 connections. are the pistons doubled up in these engines? or am i looking at a standard picture?

thanks

there should be four spots and yes the pistons double up on each part of the crank where they bolt ,you should also make sure you get the right bearings for the rods and the crank make sure you get the specs for the crank so you can get the right bearins see how much it has been turned .... 0.10 etc.

Yes, that's correct!!! There are four journals, or areas where two pistons bolt onto the crank. Both the main and rod bearings must be matched to the new crankshaft. What you are describing is often termed a "bottom end" rebuild, where you replace the crankshaft and bearings. BE SURE to clean the pickup tube for the oil pump of any sludge/debris, and replace the oil pump at this time. Can you detail the problem with the original crankshaft? JSM84

that'll be hard to discribe. i'm currently in iraq. my mechanic e-mailed and told me the bearings were going out and the oil pump needed replaceing along with the crank. i supect the bearings went out cause my rear main had been leaking slowly but shortly after i replaced the timing chain cover the rear main bursted. it was a steady stream of oil. but could it had also been cause loose timing chain? one of the previous owners replaced it along with removing the tenchener. i'm putting a gear set in to replace the chain. the new chain i put on was almost a loose as the old one. thanks for clearifying the crank for me!
