CORODED VIN PLATE

I AM LOOKING FOR THE OWNER OF A 1988 BRONCO II AND THE ONLY WAY TO FIND HIM IS TO TRACK HIM DOWN BY THE VIN # ON THE BRONCO BECAUSE NOONE SEEMS TO KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THE GUY EXCEPT THAT THE BRONCO HAS BEEN SITTING FOR A COUPLE OF YEARS NOW. MY PROBLEM IS THAT I CANT QUITE MAKE OUT THE VIN # BECAUSE THE PLATE IS CORODED AND THE NUMBERS AND LETTERS ARE ILLEGIBLE . I CANT BREAK INTO IT SO I NEED TO GUESS AND I CANT DO THAT UNLESS I HAVE SOME KIND OF CHART THAT LETS ME KNOW ABOUT THE DIFFRENT CODES FOR THAT YEAR. CAN ANYONE HELP OR DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY OTHER IDEAS ? OHH, THE REASON I AM TRYING TO FIND THE GUY IS BECAUSE I WANT TO BUY THE BRONCO BECAUSE IT IS IN EXCELLENT SHAPE AND IS WASTING AWAY......SAD......

Most states have legal proceedures in regard to abandoned vehicles, but they are usually more of a pain than worth the effort. If it is setting on someones property that you know, they can usually report it to the police and that strts the proceedure off. You could call your local DMV to fine out what the proceedure is. Around here the property owner reports it, the police do an investigation, the property owner opts to keep the vehicle and then you buy it from him.

You can try one of the VIN decoder sites on the web, or go to www.therangerstation.com

It seems like a mute point to me though, as you will need to find the owner anyway to transfer the title. There are websites to locate a person if you have his name, or you can check with the local courthouse.
