Got a 90 bronco with a 5.8. Sat for a year, got it running. Replaced: fuel pump, filter, gas, alternator, starter and solenoid, tps, and injectors. It idles smooth, rev it up sometimes good, other times it's acting like its missing. Put it under load, nope. Have to keep throttle open about 25-30% to keep it running and it moves ever so slowly. Have not pulled any codes. Am I missing something?

Yo escortwgn,

Try a Self Test for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC)s by my pal, BroncoJoe19

@

http://broncozone.com/topic/14269-code-reader/?pid=74587&mode=threaded

Some basics;

The engine temperature must be greater than 50° F for the Key On Engine Off (KOEO) Self-Test and greater than 180° F for the Key On Engine Running (KOER) Self-Test.

Run it around to heat the engine up and shift thru all gears including Reverse.

Make sure A/C is off and transmission is in Park (automatic); or in Neutral for a Manual & release clutch.

Then turn off engine, all accessories/lights (close driver's door) , etc.

Do KOEO test First

Post Code(s) here according to:

KOEO

&

KOER

Spark Plug Wire Routing 94-96 5.0 ** - INCLUDES 5.8 - engine miss, spark knock, buck/***** surge and other driveability concerns;

firing order is 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8. On these vehicles the #1 and #3, or #5 and #6 spark plug wires must be separated to eliminate the possibility of an induction crossfire.

to eliminate the possibility of the coil wire becoming disconnected, route the coil wire under the spark plug wires at the distributor cap.

Ok so it's been a long weekend of hair pulling. The computer has now begun to spit codes out at random. It's confused. Saying it's not detecting the fuel pump relay. Relay is working. The signal it's looking for is returning to computer at the right spot. It resets, and spits out other systems. Check those, doing the same thing. This went on for three tests before giving up and giving in to the fact that the computer must be faulty.

Yo Justin,

Yes, that is not good, spitting out different codes.

Any aroma of smoke from EEC inside driver's kick panel? If so, or just in case...

Likely cause are leaky capacitors; see how they are replaced by seedpress @ http://broncozone.com/topic/20788-fuel-delivery-problem/

The best way to remove the EEC is through the drivers side wheel well by loosening the plastic inner fender.

dsc_0034.jpg

Pull back the plastic inner fender so you have access to the EEC harness, this requires a 10mm socket to remove.

dsc_0040.jpg

Next you remove 2-11mm nuts on EEC rubber gourmet, remove the grommet and pull out the EEC. Here the EEC is already removed.

dsc_0046.jpg

The rubber grommet, notice the marking for "top".

Reinstall the grommet, nuts and tighten down the harness and the EEC is installed.

Here are the above pics in case I did not take copy correctly or got some out of order because of the pop-up ads.

Computer solved the problems!! Was able to drive it to trans shop. A solenoid is not working, having a hard time to shift. Think it may be part of the vss. Speedo not working. Od light is steady burning and is the rear anti lock brake.

Yo Justin,

Is RABS light lit while driving?

If so;

RABS Self Test & Diagnosis Codes; "...The possible flashout codes are listed and explained in the Flash Codes Chart. Note that Codes 1 and 16 are not used. Flashout Codes Whenever the yellow REAR ABS light comes on during normal operation, a flashout code may be obtained to aid in problem diagnosis. If the vehicle is shut off before the code is read from a RABS-I module, the code will be lost. In some cases, the code may reappear when the vehicle is restarted. In other cases, the vehicle may have to be driven to reproduce the problem and, if the problem was associated with an intermittent condition, it may be difficult to reproduce. Therefore, whenever possible, it is recommended that the code be read before the vehicle is shut off. RABS II modules have been designed with Keep Alive Memory to preserve stored codes during key-off, and are to be used to service all prior year RABS I systems, except for 1987 and 1988 Bronco II vehicles. WARNING: PLACE BLOCKS BEHIND THE REAR WHEELS AND IN FRONT OF THE FRONT WHEELS TO PREVENT THE VEHICLE FROM MOVING WHILE THE FLASHOUT CODE IS BEING TAKEN. NOTE: If the red BRAKE light is also on, due to a grounding of the fluid level circuit (perhaps low brake fluid), no flashout code will be flashed and the REAR ABS light will remain on steadily. NOTE: If there is more than one system fault only the first recognized flashout code may be obtained. Obtaining the Flashout Code A flashout code may be obtained only when the yellow REAR ABS light is on. No code will be flashed if the system is OK. There are certain faults (those associated with the fluid level switch or loss of power to the module) that will cause the system to be deactivated and the REAR ABS light to be illuminated, but will not provide a diagnostic flashout code. Before obtaining the flashout code, drive the vehicle to a level area, and place the shift lever in PARK for automatic transmissions and NEUTRAL for manual transmissions. Notice whether the red BRAKE light is on or not (for future reference) and then apply the parking brake. If a RABS(-1) module is installed, keep the ignition key in the ON position so that the code will not be lost. To obtain the flashout code, locate the RABS diagnostic connector (with the Bk/Or wire), and attach a jumper wire to it. Momentarily ground it to the chassis. When the ground is made and then broken, the REAR ABS light should begin to flash. NOTE: If the red BRAKE light was on (as noticed before the parking brake was applied), the problem may be with the low fluid level circuit and, in this case, no flashout code will be flashed and the light will remain on steadily. The code consists of a number of short flashes and ends with a long flash. Count the short flashes and include the following long flash in the count to obtain the code number. For example, three short flashes followed by one long flash indicates Flashout Code Four. The code will continue to repeat itself until the key is turned off. It is recommended that the code be verified by reading it several times. In addition, the first code flashed may be too short because it may have been started in the middle. It should be ignored..."

RABS Self Test Diagnostic Connector Location pic in a 90; "...It comes out of a large loom under the dash, coming through the firewall, near the parking brake. On mine there are 2 similar connectors in that area, the correct one has only 1 black & orange wire running to it, & was hidden on top of the loom..."

The light is burning steady. Doesn't matter whether driven or parked. I will attempt to pull codes today after I'm done fighting my brakes.

Yo Justin,

Great!

Check the reservoir before you take it on the road. If missing some fluid, while parked in same spot (you know. Angle of the dangle) check for leak (s). Usual suspects are;

Inspect all rear wheel cylinders for leaks.

Inspect front disc brake calipers for leaks.

Inspect master cylinder

Hoses and steel lines and fittings....
