chips and modulators and gizmos?

Does anyone know anything about the insertable chips that go iside your computer and it changes the settings? I just wanna know what it does and how it would affect my gas mileage and performance.

The chip makers like JET or Hypertech claim the chips will give you firmer shifts. They basically change the timing, and you can possibly get better gas mileage. You usually feel like the performance is better, since there is less shift time between gears. If you get too heavy with the right foot, you will get less mileage. I've had a few of the 90's trucks with a chip and felt like it was worth the $100 or so, and installation is simple. May not be as good as the programmers/tuners for the newer trucks, but better than stock, IMHO. I have a programmer for my 98.

where do you put the chips and can you have different chips for different things all at the same time?

The siingle chip is for your ECM or computer, that's located either behind the glove box or under the dash. If you buy a chip, it will have instructions on how to replace it for one of the factory ones. It only takes a few minutes, just be careful not to break any of the pins on the computer chip. One aftermarket chip is all you need, since the computer controls both the motor and transmission.
