Gents,

Any ideas on what is going on? My 96 Bronco, 5.0, EFI, 302, E40D, has a check engine light on, the OD light on the shifter is flashing, and the truck hesitates before changing gears and it about tosses me into the windshield.

Any ideas/help would be appreciated.

yo,

First, get the Codes scanned for Free at local Auto Zone or AAMCO

if it is 1728;

E4OD Transmission Control Indicator Lamp (TCIL) Flashing Diagnostic Trouble Codes 62, 628 and/or 1728 - most likely 1728 since you have a 96 with OBD II & transmission shifts hard for 90-96 Source: by Ford via miesk5 (Al M) at comcast.net

Read possible causes including those found i Code Diagnosis to aviod tranny rebuild, etc. Could be caused by a few less $ fixes.

Such as this;

"Right out of the gate, yes it's a slip fault but I've seen this fault logged due to a TR sensor that has water in its connector" by admin

so,

Sensor, Water Intrusion of Manual Lever Position (MLPS) also called Transmission Range (TR) Sensor TSB 95-2-12 for 89-94 Source: by Ford via miesk5 (Al M) at comcast.net

read it all; especially,

"ISSUE: Some vehicles may exhibit a shift concern and/or a harsh engagement concern due to water intrusion into the MLP/TR sensor and vehicle harness. There may also be a number of different DTC's along with those concerns.

ACTION: Replace the MLP/TR sensor and vehicle harness connector if signs of water penetration are evident. Refer to the following for service details."

This is where the Code test comes in very handy to save your $ and time for your family

E4OD Erratic Shifts & Multiple Diagnostic Trouble Codes Source: by jasperengines.com "Check the wiring harness on the right side above the exhaust manifold. If the bracket isbroken the harness can end up dropping onto the exhaust manifold. To prevent this, add atie strap to the bracket" see Link for pics and more info

Worse case is:

DTC P1728 indicates that the transmission is slipping. When the computer that controls the transmission detects a fault code like P1728, it will put the transmission into a "limp" mode. When you unhook the battery, the code is cleared and the transmission will function properly until the slippage occurs again. To resolve this problem, you will need to get your transmission overhauled. Source: by 2carpros.com

so, E4OD Limp Mode; happens when the vehicle computer recognizes a problem in it's logic. When an expected signal value from a sensor is sent to the computer and is not within the computer's programmed specifications, "secondary" programs are activated by the computer to strive to protect the transmission from damage the improper sensor signal might cause to occur. In other words, the computer is always expecting certain signal values from certain sensors i.e. the temperature sensor, the speed sensor, the throttle position sensor, etc. As long as these signals are what it would normally expect for the conditions and is normal based on all the other signals it is receiving from other sensors, it acts normally and accordingly. read more.... DTC P1728 - TSB 96-10-14, STALL - WHEN REVERSE AND/OR MANUAL LOW ARE SELECTED - (DTC) P1728 - OVERDRIVE CANCEL LAMP ILLUMINATED Source: by Ford via thedieselstop.com

or;

The flashing OD light is an indication of a transmission related trouble code in the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). When it has a trouble code related to the transmission it usually commands full line pressure to try to protect the transmission from damage. Normally this is caused by a transmission slip code. Have your computer scanned to see what transmission codes are stored. If it is a torque converter slip code keep in mind it could be stored from converter clutch slippage, or slippage in another transmission clutch pack

GL and post any code fund here!

the shop I am in, plan on leaving it. Don't remember going home in the last 3 weeks without having all 6 bays full and enough to refill them waiting for the next morn and not only that we are down 1 installer and the head builder is going into the hospital for back prob next week.

we check codes (not all will cause check engine or OD light to come on) check fluid in tranny T-case and both diff's as well as test drive most of the time don't need to rip and open the units very often to diagnose

ok, thanks

I rec'vd. an OBD II Code Reader as a gift a few yrs ago; was asking for a friend who would rather spend $ at a gas station than use it or get it done free at AZ or AAMCO.
