The truck is an 85 Bronco with a 300 CID 6 1BBL carb.

My original carb was rebuilt by a friend and the rebuild job lasted as many years as it did prior to the rebuild. My friend had been killed in a motorcycle accident so when that carb needed work I bought a rebuilt one from NAPA. That was not that long ago, a couple of years now and already it is not so great these days. Whenever I go off road and over rocks much larger than a basketball the engine quits from the jiggle. Not sure if it shuts fuel off or floods it for a moment but I think it is a piece of junk. On pavement it works fine and the fuel mileage is fine.

New carbs are $800+ from Ford. Any idea what kind of Carb I can get that would give me at least stock emmissions? Emissions is a big deal here, I don't want to have by truck yanked off the road. Heck it's only a 1bbl so I would not think anyone makes a fancy performance thing.

As a side thought, would anyone suggest upgrading to fuel injection? I think Ford injected the 4.9L 6 in 86 or 87 but not sure. Is it doable? Thanks!

I haven't had much luck lately with NAPA rebuilds, I won't buy another one. You should start looking for an injected 300, they are actually fairly common. I got a 91 150 in a trade with an injected 300. It ran great. I ended up selling it for $300 just to get rid of it. Fixing the carb would be cheaper but if you are set on the 300 injection is always nice.

Later,

Jeff

Thanks, I just recieved the new LMC truck catalog and they do have rebuilt there for the 300 6 but I did not see a new one. I guess my question is, is it safe to get a rebuilt from anyone? I have not asked as Autozone or Checker Auto if they have new for the 6 cyl. For some reason I worry that selections for the 6 are limited because there may not be as many of those engines out there. I think most broncos were sold with V8's. So what I might find is very little new and mostly rebuilt. I always thought NAPA was good with parts but I am gun shy on rebuilt carbs now.

hey desert donk, remember that bronco wasnt the only truck with a 300-6. this was also a popular engine in the f-150. the bronco is basically an f-150 from the doors forward so there should be no difference for that aspect. napa's parts are usually built for low cost. i dont know what LMC's rebuilts are like but you have other options like edelbrock and holley. by the way, the carb that i mentioned that was $80 dollars more was rebuilt. mine that i bouught was new. there are plenty of carbs out there for you bronco. :D/

Thanks Hawk. I knew they were in F150's too, a friend of mine had one. But believe it or not these are the only two I have ever seen. So I assumed that they were not popular except in fleet vehicles. And those get such high mileage they don't stay in the gene pool long. :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" /> I'll see what I can find out about something new, I believe the one that is on there is a Carter.
