i have a '93 bronco 302 5.0 EFI, i want to put in a new camshaft but i don't want to have to pay someone do a valve job or anything, meaning that i dont want to pull my heads off and spend money for someone to put new valve springs in. i have no idea what the specs are on the stock cam, so i have no idea what is safe to put in. has anyone put an aftermarket cam in? or can someone tell me what is a safe change so i don't have to do any work on my heads?

thanks in advance

Its not really the heads you have to worry about its what EFI system you have if its mass air you can do what you want if its speed density which is a good possibility then your probably better off to leave it alone . The EEC is programmed with that cams timing events and duration get outsode of those settings and youll be worse off than stock . :D /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

yeah i had a feeling about that....i guess its not really the heads im worried about its my valves opening too much and the pistons hitting them. i found some cams from crane cams that claim to be computer compatible, but i dont know what kind of intake and exhaust duration is safe with the factory valve set up

yeah i thought on alot of cams you have to convert it to mass air and get the sensor and stuff before you can get any cams that will actually give you ne performance.... like the 303 cams from ford performance.... the mass air kit is another what 150.00 bucks? , after you do that you can get some comp cam vaulve springs from summit if your worried about vaulve spring compression with .500 bend and that should cover what you want i ran those with a e303 cam in my mustang and it did fine ... and that is if it isnt the speed density and i dont know much about those definatly find out which one it is before you go and try doing anything cause it will just be a waste of money............ resurch and... goodluck

i think anything over .544 intake or exaust lift lift is pushing it cause in the summit magazine it actually warn the customer when you go up to a z303 cam you might have vaulve clearence problems and thats colser to .552 lift ..but my friend had an x303 in a other wise stock 302 and it ran great , hope this helped

Yes mass air kits are expensive a good high flow mass air sensor in itself is a couple hundred dollars . Then you need the mass air EEC along with the wiring harness . Best to find a donor truck that you can get the system off of . That 95 I just got has a mass air system but Im checking to see if it will support a 351 so not for sale yet . :D /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

Converting from speed density to mass air flow is something I have been looking at doing too. The kit from Ford Racing is $700+. It includes a conversion from bank fire to sequential port injection...which would help in these times of expensive gasoline. Here's the link:

Good luck

I have a 94 with a 351w in it. I have an aftermarket cam and here are the specs; 204 @ .050 intake duration, 214 @ .050 exh. duration (advertised is 260 intake and 270 exh) and my lift is .448 intake and .472 exh with stock rockers... I'm about to put 1.7 roller rockers on that changes that slightly, something like a .476 intake and .501 exh (I belive that to be right) and I have the speed density as well. I did have new springs put on and my heads along with my getting my heads and deck "true cut" so no worries about head gasket sealing right. I also have new comp sprigs that hold a .512 lift good but can go to a .520 I believe. I have "stock" pistons and was told that I should be able to run up to a .550 lift if I chose. That's a bit to tall of a lift for me, it's not a race truck I just wanted the little bit more low end. The only problem with this cam is that it doesn't make enough vaccume for my eec so it has an erratic idle and it's a little jumpy untill about 1500 or so RPM's. Everyone told me that it's set to be a 1500 - 6000 RPM cam but it's an idle - 5500 RPM cam that's been matched to my edlebrock intake and my bigger throttle body. I was always told the same thing about the speed density thing with the cam and yes, it probably should be done with either specing the eec with the rest of the truck or putting mass air flow on but if you can handle the wierd idle and the wierd feel under 1500 RPM (due to vaccume) then you can do it. You also have to take into consideration that your break booster is set off the vaccume as well so if you go with to big of a duration then you'll have to do something about the vaccume to your breaks. Other than that, have fun and hope I was informative? Keep on Broncin'! :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />
