Caliper ID Help.

Hello all and thanks in advance. New to site, first post here so please bare with me. I Now own a 1974 Bronco. It has a lot of goodies installed all ready. This is my second one i had a 1968 15 years ago. I noticed on this on it has front disc brakes all ready installed and power brake. I seem to have a caliper locking up but when inspected i could not find any numbers off it to ID this caliper and where it came from, ( cause i am assuming this year was not factory if i remember from research). Is there anybody out there that can help me ID the caliper by telling me what to look for so i know. I can not just take off and run to parts store as this is my transportation back to work. Sorry for long post just wanted to get details out since first post.

P.S. I know alot would like pics to see design, i can try and get some here in a little but any other info would be great if there is another way before then as parts store closes at noon.

Your post is fine.., & complete with signature & pert. info. (how rare is that.!)

Early on., folks were using GM (Cadillac rings a bell) disc setups as I recall.

Now, most of the EB stores have complete "bolt-on" (front & rear) disc kits.

I can't tell you which is which (runn'n drums) so that's the best I can do.

Hopefully some folks here will check-in that's done these conversions.

Can't those be pulled apart & cleaned..? :unsure: Shouldn't take more than an hour...?

Thanks for the reply. they can be taken apart and gone thru but in alot of cases parts or o rings of the sorts may need to be replaced and if that the case i will be down. trying to get info before tear apart so i know what i am looking for. If there are different multiple kits that bolt on now i am now in the situation were i may need to take off and just take down to parts store and match one up. Dang... I was hoping that with these trucks there was just a specific setup that was used mostly for all conversions.

I have a feeling the 3-4 EB stores get'um from the same place & are similar if not, exactly the same. Meaning they don't make them, just package them depending on customers needs.

Obviously, there may be a diff. in the earlier GM kits (parts)

Your best bet is to take pics. If you post them, here someone may be able to identify them. With pics the stores can usually recieve email, and they can identify. It's especially helpful with such an older truck, and in the case of 2 or more types being available, pics are invaluable.

I have also found that the hoses were to blame for calipers locking. Try disconnecting the hose at the caliper. Take the top of the master, and watch for a constant drip of brake fluid. Also with the hose disconnected the caliper will still have drag on the rotor if it has a bound piston. If the rotor turns normally, and there is little or no fluid dripping from the hose, the hose is bad. Replace both sides. replace and rebuild both calipers if needed also.

Ok here are the pics I have taken. And yea i agree about the hoses. I am actually going to redo the whole braking system as far as calipers, hoses, wheel cyl new fluid and all the good stuff. i just need to ID these calipers so i know what i am needing to get.

Those certainly look like old style GM calipers. There is supposed to be a rubber bushing in the holes for the mounting of the calipers on a "pin" about 4" long. Are the "pins" female 3/8 allen head? If so that is a GM caliper. There are probably a number of vehicles they fit. Most likely any GM full size car or truck, from about 72 till around 80.

steel bushings must be part of a conversion kit. Thr factory used rubber bushings. Steel bushings could be a reason the caliper is not sliding and that could be the "binding". These caliper take well to rebuilding. Just clean everything well and **** the slides and bushings with silglyde, or caliper grease.

Check if the piston will retract into the caliper.

Yea I puched on the caliper when it was off, it did retract just. Not like it should. Way to hard. I am going to look for replacements before rebuild. I prefer to just redo the whole system. Thanks for all your help to those that posted.
