Hello, I have a automatic 1992 bronco Eddie Bauer. I bought it 6 months ago and love it. I'm going to put some money into the engine but need to know where to start. I was a collision tech for 7 years before joining the USMC and know my body terminology pretty well but I don't know very much about engines. Here's the problem, I start the truck up and I have to keep a little pressure on the gas pedal to keep the RPM high or it will stall immediately. When I go to back up out of a parking spot I have to keep one foot slightly on the gas to keep the RPM up and the other on the break when or it will stall. Once I start driving for about 5 min and I can stop doing this and just use the one foot to drive. I have to go through this exercise every time the truck sits for more then 1 hour between start up's. It does this in cold and warm weather. I want to take it to a shop but I don't trust anybody in this area (auto shops love to take advantage of marines with no auto knowledge and have been known to invent problems or sabotage vehicles in my area, like sand in a gas tank). It also shows the RPM at a constant of 2300-2500 when I do get it to drive normally, It increases when I gas it but it wont go below 2500 even when I'm sitting at a stop light. I will take all ideas but please spell terms out for me as I have no idea what the abbreviations IAC, TB or EGR mean. Thank you.

Hey Goru,

First, Thanks for your service.

It will be hard to talk you through problems if you don't know the terminology. Get a Hayes manual. You can find them at most part stores and even most Wal-Marts.

Your problem sounds like it could be a build up of carbon in the intake and throttle body. and/or a problem with an TPS (throttle position sensor), an IAC, ( idle Air control), or even a temperature sensor. You could have a condition with the timing being off, or possibly a host of other things.

The first thing to do is get the manual, and do some basic checks, of timing, and a good look for anything loose or disconnected as far as wires or vacuum lines.

Do you have a CEL ( check engine light) Does it come on when you first turn your key to the run position?

get the book, do some checks, get familiar with the engine, and we will give you all the help we can here. I don't like to say, "change this" and hope that throwing parts at a problem cure it. It wouldn't help you learn either.

Good Luck

For Rons. Thanks for the input. After reading your message I feel like im on the right track as I just purchased a Haynes and it should arrive in a few days. Ill thumb through it and go step by step to get the engine to perfect. I don't mind replacing most of the parts under the hood as most of them have rust or look just plain ugly and I want it to look brand new in there. But if I can find what I need to focus on first I can save a lot of time. Again thank you for the input and im sure ill come back and hit this thread up with more questions.

The CEL does the standard light up when I first start the vehicle but then turns off but when the vehicle stalls the check engine light comes on and stays on. This is the only time the CEL comes on.

Hey Goru,

"The CEL does the standard light up when I first start the vehicle but then turns off but when the vehicle stalls the check engine light comes on and stays on. This is the only time the CEL comes on."

LOL, I can see how that looks. I mean as you turn the key to the on position and the lights in the dash come on like the seatbelt light, battery light and others. Kinda like their letting you know they work. Ive seen that hundreds of times in cars ive worked on and know that's normal. Ill read before I reply next time.
