1988 5 Speed manual. Put it in any gear and let the clutch out and nothing happens. Problem began after I mistakenly added 1 pt. of 90W gear oil to the transmission. sat in the tranny for a month without being driven (was replacing manifold) After manifold was replaced and before starting up I drained tranny and replaced with the correct fluid as specified by manual.

Could the one pint of 90m weight trashed the tranny or could I have overfilled the tranny and trashed the clutch. Thanks for any advice!

Thanks guys for the input. Here is the followup

Transfer case is in 4WD, little light comes on. (Nothing happens in 2WD either) With engine running I can shift through all the gears without using the clutch. In the lower gears there is a slight "thump" noise when I shift but no movement.

This is the five speed manual. Does it have a filter? And I suspect it doesn't have the cooler line either.

Thanks again

I'm guessing that the clutch is either smoked or there is fluid between it and the flywheel/ pressure plate. If you're not getting a grinding noise coming from the tranny then it's probably fine. You may even have an unadjusted clutch cable or if it's a hydrolic clutch then it may need to be bled (just like breaks). Hope this helped some...

Something else just doesn't sound right here...

engine running, you can shift through all gears and not use the clutch at all??

Does that include putting the tranny into first gear?? How about reverse?

Yep. That's right. All the gears including reverse.

I don't think this is related but at the same time that this happened the engine will not idle but increase in speed up to about 3K and won't go back down unless you shut off and restart the engine.
