Hi guys, first post and hope to have many more.

So anyway, I'm looking at a used Bronco for sale, and the engine apparently has a valve tap, and a new set of valve lifters should solve the problem. I'm seeing that the lifters themselves are pretty cheap, so I'm wondering what it might cost to get them installed. Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi Steve and thanks for your response.

Well, I'm no expert mechanic myself, they said they had the truck looked at at they were told this is whats wrong with it. I'm almost positive its a stock 1990 Ford Bronco with no major engine modifications, would that help narrow down the price range? Any other info I could find out that would?

Thanks.

What is the asking price? What is the mileage? I like to use a 3-4 ft long piece of ruuber hose to use as a stethoscope, and listen to several places on the engine while it's running. Listen to each valve cover, the oilpan, etc. The hose when placed on the engine and the other end to your ear magnifies any problem sounds like tapping or knocking. You can pull the dipstick and check the condition of the oil. If it's milky white, there's water/coolant getting into the oil. JSM84

I would be buying it from a friend for 500 bucks, 1990 bronco, plow included. Im not exactly sure but the mileage has to be around 100k. He said the only things majorly wrong was the engine needs a set of valve lifters, and an exhaust from the cats back.

So Im just trying to figure out how much it would cost to get these lifters installed, if it would really be a pain to do yourself.

I would look at the repair as similar to replacing the camshaft, which would run somewhere around $300-$500 for labor at a shop. You can leave the heads on, but have to pull the upper and lower intake manifolds, water pump, timing cover, radiator...Unless you can get away with just removing the intakes and pulling a bad lifter out thru the top.
