Hello all first i would like to say hello to everyone and tank you for looking into my post , heres the deal.

today i bought my first bronco 1985 XLT 351w Vin H if that helps any. back story on the truck , it has been parked for 4 years with the ebreak engaged so the back was locked up , a little reckless knowhow and we removed all the guts behind the drums to get the thing home (45 miles) as i have noone with a gooseneck. aired up the tires let it warm up and of we went. had a bit of a stalling issue at redlights so i had to put the truck in N and keep the RPMS up to keep from stalling out the put in D and continue on. Well about 2/4 into the trip home doing the same thing keeping the rpms up then placeing into drive i rolled about 20 ft then a lound clunking sound came under the truck then a grinding noize , luckly i was a ble to pull over and access the situation. The breaks do not work in 2WH , the grinding starts lightley the gets faster if i put in D and bring up the RPM. But 4WH works fine i have not tried 2WL as i limped the truck home at 30mph parked it and jumped on the fourms. =( ***

Thank you all for your help and looking forward to you all commenting.

Welcome retlaw..!

OMG...! sounds like you ran over a "liberal" ...!!!

They "clunk" & make "grindie sounds" when that happens...& never stop... :)) :D/

Just kidding.... did you put the brakes back on the rear..?

Does it grind at idle out of gear, at idle/in gear --or-- just when moving...??

Your post is a bit un-clear..,

A guess would be, the need for a by-the-book brake disassemble & re-assemble & a good cleaning.... not necessarily new parts but everything clean & working.

The front brakes as well..!!

Also possible the torque converter is having issues...

parket the truck and made a few phone calles giving it time to down a bit so i want back to see if i could figure out the problem in a little more detail. the shift **** for the tcase is missing so im takeing a wild guess to the shifters placement being from front to back

4WH/N/4WL (Please correct me if im wrong)

The truck had a stalling issue before this happend but i was chalking that up to dirty gas / fule filter. we will see tommrow. Thinking about sound and looking into all the specs and some advice from good friends the tcase is a chain driven NP208 , the sound made me think of when you were rideing you bike as a kid and that rusty chain poped off when you were going way too fast lol

If i put it all the way to the front of the shifter on the tcase the truck will move but stalls if im not quick on the gas , if i put it in gear where the 4X4 light on the dash goes off the truck has no power to the wheeles and stalls out somewhat faster.

a factor shift **** would be nice = /

included a pic of my new baby , her name is Heather.

i have not yet put the rear breaks back together she is bleading dot out the driver side wheel like a stuck pig. , the front breaks a spungy something horrid , will have to get thos bled out and redone , ill just order all new front breaks when is order all new guts for the drums.

the grinding just happens when the 4x4 shifter is all the way forward and the 4x4 light is off and the truck is put in R or D and even in N but it slows down a bit. reading througe a the forums thinking it may be a linkage issue?

Being an Early Bronco owner, I'm not fimiliar with the FS Bronco shifters.

However, something seems amiss there. I would think "full forward" with the transfer shifter would be low range/4 wheel drive.

Do you have automatic hubs..?

My first priorty when giving advise on this board is "SAFTY" :-B

So again..., the brakes need to be functioning on all four wheels B/4 you do much else. Don't want to hurt yourself, or someone else... [-X

If fluid is oozing....the front brakes wont work properly.

I wouldn't say you need all new brakes at this point, (unless they're shot.!) just clean & working with the park-brake unstuck.

This would allow you to make short test runs checking various other issues.

You can always put on new brakes when the other problems are solved.

Anyhooooo.., some of the FS Bronco owners will have to help you with the shifter positions & grindie noises, etc.

Hopefully someone will jump in here....... [-o<

this is not my daily driver so its not that much of a big deal with the truck just set up for a bit but this will be my daily driver as soon as i get the thing working right. I have a mechanic buddy of mine who worked for ford for the better part of the 90s comeing over and giving it a once over tommrow so ill have a little bit more of a insight for you all tommrow.

Iv been asking all around and we have narrowed it down to a bad tcase or a busted rear end , im leaning more to the rear end seeing as if the tcase was busted 4x4 would not work? im not a total idiot when it comes to working on cars and truck but in no way would i call myself a mechanic. I can hear the grinding noize comeing from the rear end first and about half a second later i can hear another grinding sound start comeing from the tcast transmission area.

Thoughts anyone?

Thanks

sounds liked you ******* the rear driveshaft Double Cardan joint. All that going in and out of gear at higher rpms cause you drove it home with old nasty gas would definitely have caused some issues. your T-case shifter should be 2hi- 4h1 -N- 4L. if your shaft or rear end were toast then when the tcase is in 4hi or 4low, the front end would drive so the rear would not be stressed and not make noise.

jack it up and put the rear axle on safety stands with the front wheels securely blocked spin the rear tires and drive shaft in 2hi and look for any looseness or play in the drive shaft or rear yoke.

address the obvious first, front brakes wont work if your back brakes are incomplete, put some fresh gas in and check your plugs to get it idling again.
